“I know,” he smirked, and I shook my head.

The two of us sat together watching the bar night crowd until the lights came on for closing. Liam finished his drink, but before he left, he leaned in toward me.

“Declan caught sight of her ex not far from here earlier today,” he muttered, keeping his voice low. My hackles rose and I had a feeling something big was going to happen tonight.

“Make sure the family is in place within the hour. I want everyone. Give me a call once you’re ready and I’ll make sure to get her home safely,” I replied quickly.

I’d spent quite a bit of time researching Trevor DeSoto. The two of them had gotten together in high school. There had been pictures of them going to high school prom and homecoming, and then very little evidence in the public record of them being together at least until the marriage announcement was in their local newspaper. Emma came less than six months later and then Trevor promptly joined the military and disappeared only a few months after she was born.

I would have thought it was all normal and that he was just the usual kind of shithead that abused his wife if not for the full details of his dishonorable discharge.

The real nitty gritty of the story was hidden beneath red tape, but I had enough money to find out every single sordid detail. There was a cover story that they’d told Leah, but that wasn’t what really happened. They had told her that Trevor had raped a female civilian, and that the other members of his units had to pull him off her.

What they hadn’t told her was that there was more than one woman and that the second one wasn’t a civilian but a member of his own team. They’d been sent out on a raid for a reported terrorist unit deep in a region not far from Kuwait City. He’d found a civilian all on her own and violently raped her. His unit leader, a female captain that had a pristine record of success, caught him in the act. She attempted to pull him off the civilian, but he did the same to her. The rest of the unit tried to stop it, which only ended up compromising the entire mission.

Most of them had died in the effort to get them out. Somehow, Trevor was one of the ones that escaped. Luckily, his unit leader as well as another soldier who saw was happened got out too. Liam knew this information along with me. The only reason this man was still breathing was because he was Emma’s father and his death would probably upset Leah, although I was quickly coming closer to deciding that wasn’t enough reason to allow him to keep living.

For now, though, he couldn’t set foot in my city without me finding out.

“All you need to do is signal and all of us will be there to protect her, Kieran,” Liam added.

“Good.”

He walked out of the door, leaving me alone to sip the rest of my whiskey while Leah finished up. It took about a half hour longer, which was more than enough time for Liam to get my family and my soldiers into place.

When Leah was ready, I took her arm in mine and walked her out by my side. We hadn’t gone a block before a lone hooded figure ventured out from a side alley to cut off our stroll together. I quickly jerked Leah behind me and stopped.

I knew it was Trevor before he even pushed down the hood. He reeked of booze and false courage as he wobbled from one foot to the other. His eyes were glassy. His face, painted with fury, was leveled directly at my little girl.

The woman that I was soon going to makemy wife.

“Leah O’Connor,” he screeched.

He’d probably been too cheap or lazy to fill out the paperwork to get her name changed. That wasn’t going to be a problem with me.

I didn’t wait for her to say anything. I answered for her.

“Trevor DeSoto,” I said. I didn’t need to raise my voice either. My tone of voice said enough.

Fuck with my girl and I’ll fuck with you.

“Who the fuck are you?” Trevor slurred and I chuckled softly. I raised my other hand and lifted a single finger and the streets behind me filled with men.

I didn’t need to look over my shoulder to see.

All I needed to do was look into Trevor’s eyes to see that slightest twinge of fear. I knew that wouldn’t be enough though. A man like Trevor would need to be taught a far more physical lesson than that.

“My name is Kieran Murphy.”

That should have been enough. Anyone that stepped into Boston knew who the Murphys were. This dumb twat hadn’t thought to do his research before threatening one of the most powerful mob bosses in the city.

“That bitch owes me,” he growled.

That took even less time than I thought it would.

“Leah, please take a step back with Liam,” I commanded gently.

Behind me, I heard boots brushing against the pavement and Leah’s quiet protests behind me. I didn’t look back because I didn’t want to take my eyes off Trevor, and it was a damn good thing that I didn’t.
