They didn’t come after us, nor did they yell any more obscenities at me again. I wasn’t used to that. Most times when I walked home, I was harassed the entire way.

Not tonight though.

Before I knew it, we were standing in front of the coffee shop. I was almost disappointed that the walk was over because that meant that we would part ways now. It had passed by so quickly.

“I want you to stay with her for the rest of the night. I’ll cover your shift at the bar.”

“I can’t ask you to do that,” I protested.

“I’m not asking, Leah,” he said firmly. The sound of my name rolling off his tongue was hypnotizing in a way.

“You can’t,” I began.

“Shh, Leah. It’s already decided,” he cut me off. I felt like I should argue at his bold insistence, but I didn’t have the heart.

“It’s not a bother?” I asked quietly.

“Not at all. Now go upstairs and take care of your daughter,” he dictated.

I glanced at the front entrance. I had to go through the shop to get to the door that led up to the apartment. I took out the key from my pocket and opened the front door. I paused, looking back at him.

His gaze was filled with nothing but warmth now. My gut told me that I could trust him, despite the mystery around who he was, what he did, and why everyone that we encountered looked at him like he was the powerful man in the world.

Like he was untouchable.

But… He had touched me.

I glanced down at his mouth, reveling in the softness that called to me within his lips. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down and I quickly brought my eyes up to his.

The sudden urge to kiss him came over me. I didn’t act on it.

“Thank you for walking me home,” I whispered.

“It was an honor to see you home safely, Leah O’Connor,” he offered, his smile immediately disarming, and it made me want to do nothing more except run into his arms and beg him to take me to his bed.

I smiled and looked away, trying to cover up the sudden change in direction of my thoughts.

“Have a good rest of your evening, Kieran,” I said quickly. I blushed when my voice trembled, but his expression thankfully showed no sign that he’d heard it. I let out a small sigh of relief.

“You too, Miss O’Connor,” he murmured.

With a reluctant breath, I turned away. When the door closed behind me, I closed my eyes, full of regret that I hadn’t felt his lips on mine.

I walked through the shop to the back, where the entryway to my apartment was. I opened that lock too and paused to glance toward the windows at the front entrance.

He was still there, waiting patiently until I got into my apartment.

Like the perfect gentleman.

CHAPTER4

Kieran

There was something about her that called to me.

I stood there for a long moment after the door closed and Leah disappeared. She was beautiful, sure, but there was more to it than just that.

The moment she walked through that door back at Sean’s Pub would be one that I would never forget. The light caught her rich auburn hair in such a way that it shone as if it was the sun. Her body was slight but curved beautifully in all the right places. Her white shirt dipped down in the front, giving an innocently naughty view of what were likely perfect breasts hidden underneath. Her jeans hugged her hips enticingly and it wasn’t until she walked away and left the room that I was able to fully appreciate the rounded curves of her ass.
