“Well, I guess someone of yourbackgroundwouldn’t know any of this.” His tone cold and cutting as he continues, oblivious to my building rage.

I wonder how pretty he’d still look with a few bruises.

I clench my fists at my side, trying to stop myself from knocking the arrogant ass out cold.

“My predecessor spared no expense when teaching me,” he continues, oblivious.“I took to my duties like a swan to water,” he says, his chest slightly expanding.

More like a pigeon.

“I didn't formally introduce myself. I am the Second Sector's Librarian—”

“I don't remember asking.” I smirk, cutting him off before he can continue his condescending spiel. Why did I need to know his name? I’d only be calling himdickheadorassholein my head, anyway.

“It’s Ilyric," he grits out, his cheeks flushing an adorable shade of pink. He narrows his eyes at me. “Some people have manners and follow etiquette—”

“Andsomepeople don't give a shit,” I quip, watching as the pink shade turns slightly red.

“Anyway, you said it yourself, the Portal would take you to the safest Library. And it chose mine.”

At this, his brows furrow and lips pinch together, finally rendered silent.

Either way, I wasn’t leaving the haughty ass or anyone else down here, and right next to the Records. It was my duty to protect them, and I didn’t know these people. I wouldn’t take such careless risks. Having them all together in the main Library was the best option for everyone.

“Besides, we need to prepare for as much as we can with any information you or the others have. We should all stay together.”

He grits his teeth before opening his mouth to speak. “But—”

I raise my hand toward him, cutting off any further arrogant objections he had.

“This isn’t up for discussion. This is Sector Five, my Sector. Remember that,Ilyric. I am the Librarian here. So you are now undermycare.”

I give him a sardonic smile, “Let’s get along well.”

He scoffs. “Fine. I’ll play along…for now. Rhys.”

I smirk as he brushes by me on the stairs, his eyes peering down at me as he passes me.

I flinch as his scent hits me, a sweet yet musky scent, one of fresh herbs and old parchment.

A chortle rings out behind me as I realize I’ve been left behind with Mr. Dorien Gray—I mean Lucien. His eyes dark and unflinching as they almost dissect me with their gaze. An intrigued look on his face.

He opens his mouth, a dark grin spreading, all white glistening teeth almost like fangs. His tongue darts out and slowly caresses each tooth as he continues his perusal of my body.

“You are quite the intriguing one,Rhys,”he says while stalking slowly toward me.

“All fire and flame…” He breathes in, shuddering ever so slightly.“So sweet and tempting.”

His eyes stare intently into my own as he tilts closer to me, and a shiver works its way down my spine.

But all too quickly, he lets me go, releasing me from his beguiling spell. He walks to the stairs and begins to head up. A smirk permanently placed on his face as he gives me one final backward glance.

I sigh and brush my hands down my face.

It's not the time for this.

With an attack on the way and multiple injured and upset supes to deal with, I’ve already got my hands full.

I turn toward the stairs and make my way up.
