He stood wide-eyed, unfocused and breathless. “Shit...” he eventually said.

“Let’s get off the tracks,” James said and as Matt turned he noticed the mark at the base of his neck. The web of Black Widow—the signature she left on her victims. But this time she’d failed.

He took another step, pausing.

It couldn’t have been Widow, though, that had secured Matt to the track. James had had his eyes on Widow, and she didn’t have time to get off the train and take down Matt.

The blonde woman was Widow’s accomplice.

Widow was expanding her web.

LACHLAN

Lachlan’s heart sank as the train pulled up to the platform. He shook his head, unable to believe the events that had unfolded. Unable to believe what he had witnessed.

He looked at the train, searching for blood splatter or fragments of chopped up bodies. But he saw nothing.

He looked back to the tunnel but it was empty.

He looked at the train again, moving forward to get a better look.

He squinted, narrowing his eyes. It was clean.

Admittedly, he didn’t know how much mess two bodies made, but he’d expected to see something.

“Deacon, bring the car to Lexington Avenue,”James said.

Lachlan’s head snapped to the tunnel, exhaling the breath he didn’t know he’d been holding as two figures emerged.

He couldn’t believe it.

He’d heard the legends of Liam Smith—the agent who could do the impossible. Liam Smith, the man James Thomas had once been.

Lachlan shook his head, grinning as James and Matt walked toward them. He wove through the crowd, meeting them at the platform. He extended his hand as security ran up to them.

“Hands in the air! Hands in the air!” the guards said, raising their weapons.

They put their hands up, Lachlan included. “Sir, we’re with the CIA. We’ll provide identification,” James said. “I had to check something... false alarm—no need to worry.”

The security guards looked between them. “Get off the tracks. I’ll need to see your identification.”

James nodded.

Once the security guards lowered their weapons, James jumped onto the platform first then extended a hand to Matt who swayed as James pulled him up. Matt blinked, as if trying to clear his vision.

From his back pocket James pulled his wallet and handed them a card. The security guard’s eyes doubled in size.

“Apologies, Sir,” one guard eventually said. “All is good?”

“All is good. Thank you for doing your job,” James said politely.

Security turned and left, leaving Lachlan, James, and Matt looking at each other.

“Let’s get out of here,” James said, cool as a cucumber, like they hadn’t almost been flattened by a train.

Lachlan’s mind was reeling. He was still trying to understand why James Thomas had backed away from the train they could’ve gotten on, how Matt had ended up tied to the track, and how James and Matt had walked out of the tunnel alive.

One thing was for sure, though: James Thomas was loyal, above all.
