My hope dies down a little. I shouldn’t be surprised, though. We don’t know each other, and it’s not like she would confess her undying love to me. It’d be nice, but not realistic and that’s sometimes my problem. I hope for the magic to just magically happen. Just because I find her irresistible, doesn’t mean she feels the same.

“Were you able to save the money?” I ask on a yawn.

Her smile lights up her face, brighter than a Christmas tree. “I think we got most of it back.” She squeezes my hand. “Thanks to you, Evan. Again, thank you.”

Working to make myself comfortable in bed, it’s a battle with the pounding headache, but I make do.

“Did they catch… the…” yawning, “I’m going to…” My eyes fall closed and sleep quickly steals me away. I have enough in me to squeeze her hand back.

Her lips press against my forehead. “Thank you. Sweet dreams, Evan.”

One last thought enters my brain before I lose myself in slumber…

As long as she is beside me, I will.

Noel

Someone clears their throat, making my eyes launch open. My head rests against Evan’s chest. I smile as I lift my head and notice that he’s still out. I’m relieved because he needs his rest.

The nurse and doctor were true to their word and came in every hour to check on him. In those little moments, we’d talk and get to know each other.

I thought he was familiar, but I couldn’t place him until he mentioned that he works at Sip Happens. That makes me feel a little better that he knows everybody I work with and is friends with some of their partners. That’s the social hangout of the Dirty Hoes since it’s within walking distance, isn’t a meat market, and has some seriously awesome food, my hips and ass can verify that fact.

After he’d fallen asleep a couple of times, I thought about heading home. After all, Mari brought my keys, and I don’t have to stay. But I like being here with him. I like him. He’s so easygoing. But this is where I’ve been before.

I fall fast.

I fall hard.

And most of the time, I fall flat on my face when the guy turns out to be not what I thought he was.

And that part isn’t my fault. I need to do better, but men need to do better too.

If you don’t like my profession, don’t date me. If you don’t like my body, don’t tell me how to change, just leave. And if you don’t like me, don’t pretend. That hurts the most. I’d rather they just walk away. Being used for what’s between my legs has been the worst of the worst. Those men will say anything to get you into bed.

But I don’t think Evan’s like that.

I swivel my body toward the door, thinking it was the doctor or nurse who cleared their throat so they could access Evan. I was sleeping on his chest and moved, but my vision is met with surprise. It’s not a doctor or a nurse.

It’s my brother, Nolan.

And by his tight jaw and crossed arms, he’s not happy.

“Can I speak to you?” he says a little too loudly and I send him an icy glare.

“He’s sleeping,” I shout whisper back and stand. I gaze back at Evan, and a huge smile breaks out on my face when he mumbles my name.

When I look back, Nolan’s not so endeared by it.

I quietly step away, hoping not to wake Evan, and move into the hallway.

Before I can say anything, Nolan’s arms are around me. “You scared the shit out of me. And then I heard from Mari what happened to you. Why didn’t you call me?”

“I… everything happened so fast. But I’m okay. I won’t ever run after a robber again, I promise.”

“You what?!”

Oh, crap. Always give less information than more, Noel.
