BARRETT

Mia sneaks out of her parents’ home, and even in her sleep clothes, she’s afuckingvision. My eyes hungrily take in every inch of her. The oversized robe, head-wrap and slippers. All in various shades of pink. I almost smile at the image she offers, cute and huggable. Almost. Cause the woman is not smiling. Her expression displays the hurt of her unanswered calls and messages, the worry about what our future entails. She’s also mad as hell! And maybe, I pray, hopeful…

Mia stops at a few feet distance from me.

“Barrett.”

“Hey, sweetheart. How are you?”

My question ignites a flare of temper in her amber eyes.

“Fine, sweetheart.” Her last word is heavy with disdain.

I swallow with difficulty and take a step forward, unable to maintain the excruciating distance I’ve imposed on us for the past week.

“Not me, baby,” I whisper. “I’m not doing fine.”

She lets out a broken exhale, emboldening me, and I further close the distance between us. Coming to stand so near that the heat of our bodies mingle in the soft summer night. I stop before the temptation to take her hand becomes too strong.

“I fucked up,” I admit.

Mia faintly shakes her head and moves closer. “No,Ifucked up. It’s just… I didn’t know how to tell you, Barrett.”

Heartbroken to see my beautiful, strong fiancee fidgeting with her hands, and to hear her anguished voice, I interrupt, “No, Mia. I messed up.” I lean to bring our faces level, intently gazing into her eyes. “I was hurt, jealous and furious at that prick and the situation we found ourselves in.”

When Mia looks away, eyes filled with tears, my fingers pinch her chin, turning her face back to me.

“You did nothing wrong, love.” My voice is low and soft. Full of remorse. Gentle enough to soothe. Asking for forgiveness.

Mia’s big brown eyes stare up at me, tears rolling down her face.

“This was a bump on our path. A lesson. Wehaveto talk to each other. That’s it. I trust you. I know you… and I love you.”

She lets out a soft sob, at once breaking and mending my heart.

“I’m so very sorry I hurt you. I… I couldn’t… didn’t want to say or do something I wouldn’t be able to take back. I’m sorry, honey.”

Mia wipes away at her face and gives me a brave, shaky smile.

“I appreciate you taking responsibility and I forgive you, but I’m at fault, too. I should never have allowed him to keep contacting me after you and I got engaged.”

In a gesture mirroring my earlier one, she cups my jaw into her soft, warm palm, asking, “forgive me?”

Throat constricted. I can only nod my acquiescence, and Mia’s smile blooms into full life.

“But you cannot do this, Barrett. You alsohaveto talk to me.”

I nod again, frantically this time, words still stuck down my throat.

“Good, now do you want to sneak inside?”

“Mia!”

“What? Don’t Mia me. You’re coming or what”

“Fine, but I’m not staying long!”

She giggles, discreetly preceding me into the dark, silent house. We sneak up the stairs, down a long corridor, till we reach her room and quickly slip inside, locking the door behind us. I immediately pick up Mia, who muffles a shriek, and lays her on the bed, burying my face between her thick thighs. Not even taking the time to study the room I’ve dreamt of being allowed into since I hit puberty. In one firm move, I pull her slip shorts and panties off her long legs and part her knees. She’s watching me with huge eyes and I return her stare.
