Page 76 of Who We Love

I grin. Matt is a lot like his father in that sense, which is amazing, as it’s noticeable that Chris isn’t his biological dad.

“Suits can be uncomfortable.”

He nods a couple of times. “Yet, I do it when my man needs me. It’s human nature. Do everything for those we love.”

I don’t know what to say or how to react. Why is he here? Should I ask him? Maybe he needs a break from the crowd.

“I had a lot of sex. You can read it in any unauthorized biographies. There’s always some story or some starlet talking about sleeping with me.” He presses his lips together, making a thin line. “It wasn’t until I met Gabe that I learned to trust, and to love. With him I understood the difference between sex and making love. Even though there was always a woman involved when we started our relationship, he and I weren’t just fucking.”

He better get to the point because hearing about his sex life is quite uncomfortable.

Chris scoffs. “I had never been attracted to men until him. I couldn’t help but fall for my best friend. It was fast and irrevocable. But Gabe was a famous celebrity. Women adored him—they paid good money to see his movies.”

Chris dusts his leg and then crosses it. “I loved him so much that I distanced myself from him. It was for his own good. Plus, what if he didn’t love me back?”

That’s crazy talk. They’re a great couple and have an incredible family. “But you two are so happy. Why would you leave him?”

“Didn’t you hear me? I loved him so much that I made a sacrifice. He couldn’t be with a man. His career would be in jeopardy.”

“But you can’t decide for him.”

He grins. “Exactly. You see it because you’re on the outside. I see what you did with Thea and Matt, and I understand. Also, I can tell you it was stupid to do it.”

“She needed me to leave.”

Chris shakes his head. “No. You needed to stay. If you had stayed, you wouldn’t have faced your father’s heart attack and the downfall of his company on your own. We, your family, would’ve been there right after we fixed Thea’s bad publicity.”

I’m speechless. Why would he do that? I’m nobody, just some random guy who slept with his son.

“It’s hard to accept help when you’ve been on your own for years. I understand. Your parents aren’t supportive.” He finally stands up, taking his jacket. “We welcomed you to the family. That made you a Decker. I don’t know how you kids will work things out, but in the meantime, you have a home and two fathers who fully support you. Do you understand?”

This is so different from what my father told me when I left home. He’s civil now, but I’m the adult in the relationship. The one who has to give his full support and expect nothing in return.

“Thank you, sir,” I say.

“It’s Chris. I don’t expect you to call me Papa yet, but one day…” He shrugs. “Just take care of yourself, please. You look too thin and tired.”

I don’t recall the last time I slept more than two hours, and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to rest again.

ChapterFifty-One

Matthew

This isn’tmy first premiere, but so far, nothing has worked as expected. Ainsley and Mason had to stay in Seattle because Gracie had a cold. I almost lost my shit while walking the red carpet. Then there was my encounter with Tristan.

Why did I have to follow him?

Pria and Jacob ditched us not even an hour after we arrived at Black Out. Something about public indecency and avoiding another media blowout. I’m sure that was code for we want to have loud sex, which, if we stay at my parents’ house, they won’t be able to do.

Thankfully, my parents were tired, and they decided to leave early too. That leaves me to either drive them or stay in the same building as Tristan. I choose taking my parents home. During the silent drive, it’s on the tip of my tongue to ask Papa what happened with Tristan. I saw him go into his office.

There’s no need since Dad says, “Do you know Tristan is now the CEO of Cooperson Corporations?”

I make a non-committal noise and keep my eyes on the road.Of course, I had no idea, but why would he do that? It wouldn’t surprise me if I find out that he’s engaged or married to Valerie, or was her name Vanessa? I don’t give a fuck about her name.

“It took me a long time to realize why Chris left me,” Dad continues.

“What are you talking about? Are you two separating again?” I almost growl because I don’t think I can handle that.
