CHAPTER EIGHT

LANDON

Her silky hair tumbledaround her face, highlighting her green eyes. I saw flecks of blue in them for the first time, and her smile turned mischievous as she moved down the bed, the white sheet draped around her naked body. I was already hard when she reached my dick. Her rosebud lips wrapped around it, and as her gaze remained locked with mine, she licked and sucked, drawing out the pleasure with each careful move.

I groaned as a wave of electricity and satisfaction rolled over me. Plenty of women had done this before, but her mouth was different. Better. It was pure, honest, and free of the expectations that often entered my bed. She wanted only to satisfy me, and it showed in the way she handled the most sensitive part of my body.

“Fuck,” I said as we moved closer to release. This time, there was no doubt I’d let myself come. “Fuck, Rebecca—”

An incessant beep exploded in the room, shaking the moment away. I opened my eyes and dismissed the loud alarm on my phone. Six thirty. Hard cock. Empty bed.Fuck. When had I ever dreamed of a woman in my bed?

Annoyed and groggy, I pushed through my morning routine, not allowing myself to dwell on the fact that dreaming about Rebecca came as a bit of a surprise. Sure, I was intrigued by her, had enjoyed our dinner debate, and went to bed thinking about her...but sexual fantasies? That didn’t fit with who I normally was. I thought about that as I completed the familiar regimen. Fifty pushups, a one-minute plank, twenty kettlebell lifts. A piss, shower, and shave. A cup of coffee and morning emails in the small office adjacent to the master bedroom before shuffling into the closet to retrieve my clothes. I settled on a pair of dark jeans, white polo shirt, and blue blazer. My usual uniform.

When I arrived at the kitchen downstairs, I put my unanswered questions aside. Peggy waited with my favorite smoothie, a concoction of kale, celery, chia seeds, and other things she insisted were good for me. She offered eggs and bacon too, and I asked for a plate of scrambled ones before thanking her and taking a place at the bar that extended from the enormous central counter.

I sipped Peggy’s drink before I asked one of the questions that had been on my mind most of the morning. “Have you seen Rebecca today?”

“No.”

“Interesting.” I glanced at the clock above the stove. “She’s supposed to be here in five minutes.”

“Do you think she’d like breakfast?”

I shrugged. “I have no idea.”

“Well, I’m ready if she does.” My longtime cook stood at the range as the eggs simmered in a large skillet. She smiled at me over her rimless glasses, ones she’d recently taken to wearing every day. They made her look older and tired. “You look distracted. What’s on your mind?”

“What isn’t?”

“I suppose it’s tough trying to be a master of the universe.”

“Sometimes.” I swallowed some more smoothie. “I can always count on you to look after me, Peggy.”

“It’s my job.” She laughed, plated the eggs, and wiped her hands on the towel near the sink. “Well, not exactly, but you never seem to mind when I do.”

“You’re right, I don’t.”

I put down the glass. Peggy was more than an employee, and she knew it. She was a woman who quickly ingratiated herself into my life after I hired her when I moved to Palm Beach from Palo Alto. Peggy made my life work, and I didn’t know what I’d do without her. Best of all, she had a mind like a steel trap, and I knew I could confide in her.

“Looks like the new HQ is finally ready,” I said. “Nothing like things coming down to the wire.”

Peggy placed the food in front of me. “Was that why Robert stopped by last night?”

I nodded. “I think we’ll have at least five hundred at the party tomorrow. The governor says he’s coming, plus a few congresspeople, and it looks like the media presence will be big.”

“This is an amazing thing you’re doing.” She had a knowing, almost proud look on her face, her eyes bright as she studied me, as if she felt she shared in some of this success.

“Chatter has a lot of potential, and I want to make sure it reaches it.”

“I’ll have to get an account now.” She turned on the nearby coffee maker. “My grandson says once I start, I won’t be able to stop.”
