“I mean, I’m sure he thinks I did this. He probably has...I mean, I don’t mean anything to him.”

I thought back to the previous night, and all the things he’d said to me that morning before he left. He was a billionaire and way out of my league. I had no reason at all to believe anything he’d said wasn’t a lie and weren’t meaningless platitudes that had something to do with getting me in bed. All the research I’d done on Landon told me he was a guy who didn’t have time for commitment, he was married to his companies and didn’t care about anything else. Why would I be any different?

“Too much of a risk to reach out to me,” I added.

“I’m sorry, honey.”

“Not as sorry as I am.” I grimaced. “And believe me, the regret is growing.”

“Okay, let’s think this through.” She braced her hands on her knees and took a few deep breaths. I could almost see the thoughts turning in her mind. “How are we going to do this? We need to get you to your car.”

“What about the maintenance elevator in the back? I can use that to get to the underground parking lot.”

“Good. I like that.”

“And they can’t get in right now. I mean, if someone else who lives here doesn’t let them in.”

“I don’t think anyone will.”

“So, I’ll pack a bag and...leave.”

She nodded a few times. “I’ve got a set of spare keys to the cottage at my apartment. We can get them there, and...yeah, that will work fine.”

“We can do this.”

“Yes, we can.”

I stood from the couch, feeling a little more resolved. Olivia was right, nobody would come to the cottage, and I had a shot of getting some much-needed privacy as I worked out what to do next when it came to dealing with this disaster. “How much do you think I should pack?”

“I don’t know. For a few weeks?”

“Yes. A few weeks’ worth of clothes. That sounds good.”

I started to walk to the bedroom, and she grabbed my arm. “What about your...appearance?”

“What?” I glanced down at my clothes and back at her. “Do you...I don’t know...do you think I need a disguise?”

She screwed up her face for a long moment. “Yep,” she finally said, and I saw some mischief glinting behind her eyes. “And I have a few ideas.”
