“I’m sure you know.” She turned to me and squinted her eyes. “Rebecca was right, you’re a lot hotter in person.”

“Thank you.”

I didn’t add that people often told me that, and that fact struck me. Just a few weeks ago, I might have—might have acted with false humility and made a comment to ensure the other person knew how important and powerful I was. But things had changed. I’d changed.

For the better.

“My team is working to figure out who did this,” I added, not needing to further describe the “this.” She was friends with Rebecca, and she probably knew more details than she was letting on. “We’re going to get to the bottom of it, and there will be consequences.”

“More for her than you,” she scoffed.

I shook my head. “Not this time. This time is going to be different. It can be different if you just let me know where I can find her.”

Another long moment passed between us, and I could almost see Olivia weighing the pros and cons of helping me in her mind. Finally, she let out a resigned sigh. “Okay, I’ll help you. But only because I really believe you.” She paused. “And you better not screw her over.”

“I won’t,” I promised.

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

REBECCA

Iparked my rentalcar in the open spot next to the SUV, my stomach twisting with a heady mix of warmth and anticipation.Somehow, I knew this was going to happen.I turned off the engine and took a deep breath before I got out, a breath I hoped would calm me, but did little to make me feel better. I should have guessed this moment would happen, but after several days on my own, I’d put it aside. Landon and I weren’t meant to be together; we’d been doomed from the start.

And now the moment I dreaded was here.

Landon got out of the backseat as soon as my feet touched the gravel, calling out to me as he emerged from the vehicle. “I know you don’t want to see me, but I had to see you, Rebecca.”

I shut my car door and walked toward the small path uniting the lot with the house. “How the hell did you find me out here?”

He shrugged.

“I should have expected this,” I muttered more to myself than to him. “I’m sure you have the power to find about anyone.”

“Maybe.” The uncertainty of his voice made me stop at the edge of the stone walkway. “Please, Rebecca, don’t shut me out.”

“Is that what you consider this?” I spread a hand, my mind turning over the last few days—the stress, the confusion, the frustration, the betrayal. “Look, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. We both made a huge mistake, but I’m the one who’s going to lose everything.I’mthe one who’s going to pay for all this.”
