Christmas in Aspen apparently kept people at home. Or they used the ski-in option for the houses nearby.

As we entered a more residential area, more Christmas lights appeared on the passing trees, and they slowly came on, twinkling to life in brilliant bright colors.

She opened the thermos and poured a small mug of hot chocolate, taking a long sip before offering me some. I took a careful sip, not wanting to spill it on the jacket.

“Where do you come up with these ideas?”

I caught the twinkling in her eyes. “Let’s just say I was inspired.”

I caught the nod from the driver—we were a few minutes away from our final destination.

I looked at her, snowflakes dusting her eyelashes, contentment and happiness radiating on her face. I wanted to imprint this moment in my head for as long as possible. I was falling harder, faster for her than I’d ever fallen for anyone.

She looked up at me then, her hand cupping the side of my face before she leaned up and kissed me, her lips tasting like the sweet hot chocolate.

Part of me was tempted to tell the driver to take us home instead, but…the surprise wasn’t over yet.

“Almost there,” he said over his shoulder.

“Where are we headed?” She sat up straighter and looked around. More tire tracks in the snow here, the piles on the side enormous—the area had been plowed fairly recently. I knew that much from the text message—it had been cleaned privately yesterday.

I cleared my throat as we went through a set of open gates and up towards an enormous home in the distance lit in soft, warm Christmas lights. The trees were all decorated, not only with lights, but also giant multicolored metallic ornaments.

She squeezed my hand, and I caught her small smile. She still had no idea.

A few minutes later, we came to a stop in front of the large entrance that seemed more reminiscent of a hotel than a house. The driver slipped off his seat and came to help us out.

I shook his hand, thanking him for the wonderful trip, and Jenna agreed, her back to the front door that was opening.

I caught sight of the man standing there in a bright red sweater and jeans. The moment he saw us, he grinned, stepping out in the chill air. I could tell he was waiting for her to notice him.

I took the thermos from the driver, telling him we’d text when we were ready to head back, then Jenna turned, and I smiled, watching her go wide-eyed as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.

“Noah?” She turned back to me in shock. “How? What...I…” she shook her head. “How?”

“I checked your driver’s license…got your last name and voila…here we are.” I smiled. “Merry Christmas, Jenna. I couldn’t have you miss this for anything, could I?”

She stared at me, speechless, then reached up and kissed me, cupping my face for a moment after. I could have sworn she was about to sayI love you, but it was there, clear as day in her eyes.

I nodded slightly, willing her to see I loved her, too.

“Thank you, thank you…thank you!” She smiled the biggest smile I’d ever seen on her face, then grabbed my hand and pulled me after her.

We hurried up the freshly cleared front steps, the sleigh pulling away behind us.

Guess I was staying.

That’s what the plan had been anyway, but being there now, and seeing the way her brother watched me for a moment, I wondered: did I really want to undergo scrutiny? Not just by him, but the entire family. It sounded like it’d be quite the crowd inside, ready to celebrate the holidays and proposal.

Not many people wanted a random rock star crashing their family Christmas, let alone their surprise proposal.

Noah hugged Jenna tightly, then turned to me. I could see the similarity between the two for a moment, especially in his smile.

“Come on in, you two must be freezing after that sleigh ride.”

Jenna just smiled. “I’m toasty, he took good care of me.”

Her brother smiled at me with a nod, and I followed them in.
