Damon got behind the wheel. “If Fung doesn’t pay by tomorrow, with interest, I’ll take care of him.”

I returned to my call with Svetlana. This time she had a description of the man Aslanov had sent over. What was that old bastard up to?

Something about the news didn’t feel right. The asshole could be anywhere. Suddenly I felt the need to see Katya with my own eyes and make sure she was okay. It had nothing to do with the fact that I hadn’t seen her in two weeks.

“We need to go to Flux. Now.”

“No need to worry. I’ve got eyes on her,” Damon said, as he took a turn toward the club.

Less than half an hour later, we entered the club. I sat down heavily in a chair upstairs, watching the dance floor from behind the mirrored glass.

My eyes drank in the sight of Katya like I was a man dying of thirst. Sitting at a table below, she shone like a beacon of light. It was a spot reserved specially for her and her crew so they could sit in private without a horde of dancing people in their way. Never had I felt this detached from her life as this night. Never was I hit so strongly with the urge to scoop her up and whisk her away from this place. A crazy voice in my head told me I could just take her and leave. Would she come with me?

She’d asked me to end the Bulgarian’s suffering, so I had. For now. I’d be meeting him again in the afterlife. Could I do the same when it concerned my plans for my father? Would I be able to live with myself if I forsook my mother’s vengeance to live with the woman my soul desired?

I took another sip of my vodka and the fiery liquid burned my throat. There was no way forward, neither was there a way back. I had frozen in time, yet it kept on moving forward.

Tick.

Tock.

KATYA

The morning after girls night I woke up feeling groggy. Going out on a Thursday night might have not been the brightest idea. But finals week had just finished, and I figured I deserved a break. Tommie and the rest of the girls night crew had thought so too. I’d intended to introduce Lily to them, but Baran had quickly torpedoed that plan by snatching her away the moment he’d set eyes on her entering the club.

What I wouldn’t give for Kristoff to want me like that. To look at me like I was the only thing that mattered in his world. Once again, my mind veered off to golden shores which only existed inside my head.

Half asleep, I fluffed up my pillow.

I homed in on Lily, who was dressed in a pencil skirt and heels. She looked like she was going to walk into a boardroom.

I yawned. “What are you doing up so early? It’s barely even time for breakfast.”

“I have a thing at the bank.”

I rose on my elbow. “You look like the cat who just ate the canary. How is that even possible when you haven’t had your morning coffee? Wait, don’t tell me! Let me guess. Are you going to meet with Baran again?”

Lily grabbed her bag from her desk. “This has nothing to do with him.”

“Uh-huh. You had something to eat yet?”

“Nope. I figured I’d get some on my way there. There’s this great bakery next to—”

“Bakery? I’m in. Wait for me!” I scrambled out of bed and took a shower in record time.

“So youcantake a quick shower,” Lily said pointedly.

I pulled a cute top over my head, then put on my skinny jeans. “I can, but why would I want to? There’s nothing better than standing under a hot spray of water massaging your shoulders. Though this shower doesn’t compare to the one at home,” I continued as I put on my sandals. “Oh well, gotta row with the oars I have and all that.” I messaged Yuri that I was going to grab some breakfast.

We had barely made it off campus when a black van screeched to a halt next to us. Three men jumped out and grabbed me and Lily. A hand clasped around my mouth and I struggled, but could barely move. Their hands were like manacles. My heart raced and felt like it was going to explode. Oh, God, not again. I couldn’t go through this again.

“Which one do we need?” one of them asked.

Me. I’m the one you need. Please, let Lily go.I mumbled, but my words got lost.

“Dunno. Just get them both,” the one with a gray comb-over said.
