Someone had kidnapped Katya to get to me, and that was unforgivable. Any man worth his salt should just flat out try to kill me, maybe with a car bomb or two. But abducting a woman from my household? That went against the code. And I didn’t handle it well when someone went against the code. When I found Kolev, I was going to wipe out any trace of his existence from this town. San Francisco belonged to me. Just like Katya belonged to me.

I should’ve never sent her away. She’d pleaded with me to stay, more than once. I should have kept her inside the mansion, in my fortress of solitude, where no one could touch her. Why the fuck had I sent her away?

Damon took out his tablet and tapped the screen a few times. He seemed focused, coordinating this op with military precision. Trackers, I reminded myself. I had put trackers on her for times like this.

I took a deep breath. I needed to focus and stay rational instead of picturing pulling Kolev apart limb by limb.

“Where are we with finding her?” I eyed Damon, urging him on.

He put up a map on one of the enormous screens in the room. A red dot showed me her exact location.

Kolev gave me an ultimatum. Either I would share my business with him or he was going to carve Katya up. I peered at my phone as if by some miracle Katya’s voice would come through. I’d expected her to call me to ask for something as compensation for me banning her from the gathering again. It was like the circle of life—whenever I got my way, she asked for something in return. Never did she ask for clothes or jewelry, or anything as easy as that. No, her requests concerned things that were much more expensive, like freedom.

“I’m going to pull his fucking head off,” Viking grated.

Angel, who leaned against the windowsill, was still trying to reach Yuri. He shook his head. He continued to call the other soldiers who had been with them, but I knew it would lead to nothing.

“You sure she’s still there?” Angel asked as he put on a Kevlar vest.

Damon nodded. “Unless they took both her earrings and bracelet, she’s in there.”

Viking checked his guns. “You paranoid bastard. Chipping her was a great idea.”

I looked at Damon. “Is everyone ready?”

“Got six vans and fifty men at the ready. Kolev won’t know what hit him.”

“Let’s go get our girl,” Viking said.

Our girl. When had Katya become our girl?

As if he’d heard my thoughts, Viking glared at me.

The closer we got to the end of Sokolov’s four-year-term, after which he said he’d come for her, the more frequent the glares from Viking got. I should’ve prevented them from bonding. I should’ve prevented a lot of things, like her getting into the hands of some Bulgarian wannabe.

They all looked at me to give the go-ahead. All I could think of, all I could see before me, was Kolev’s blood. Tonight I would feast on his bones.

“I want Kolev alive. Anyone who kills him will take his place.”

Damon nodded and talked to his earpiece, delivering the message.

Now it was time to delivermymessage. No one fucked with my Bratva and lived.

KATYA

I woke up in a dark room. There were murmurs all around me. Someone was crying, and it smelled foul. I seemed to be lying on a cold floor so I pushed myself to lean my back against a cold stone wall. I took in my shadowy surrounding.

It looked like a silo or perhaps some sort of warehouse. From what I could see, there were a dozen women stuffed inside this place with me. All of them were young and looked terrified. Some were huddled into the corners, crying. One of them seemed shellshocked, based on the way she’d embraced her knees and was rocking back and forth. My adrenaline spiked as the horror of my situation hit me. I began searching for an escape.

There was a bathroom on the other end of the room, and a sink to my left. The door right in front of me seemed ominously shut.

“Here.”

I looked up when a girl with a busted lip offered me a cup of water.

She had curly blonde hair and freckles all over her body. I could tell because she was in her underwear. It suddenly reminded me I was still wearing nothing but my bikini.
