KATYA

The next morning over lunch, I buzzed with anticipation about the upcoming night. At least one good thing had come out of my kidnapping—I was going on a girls night. So it wasn’t with anyone I knew. So Kristoff had basically pawned me off on the wife of a friend, but it was a start. Beggars couldn’t be choosers, and I instinctively knew that if I didn’t go with Jazzy’s crew tonight, I wouldn’t be going with anyone else either. I didn’t have a lot of friends at college. None really, other than some classmates I saw at school. In my teens, I never had the chance to be a social butterfly because of all my cancer treatments, and after mom had died, I wasn’t interested. That had been three years ago, and I knew my mother wouldn’t want me to become some hermit. We’d made a pact that I would try to live a normal life. I looked around the lavish mansion, with the housekeeper in the kitchen and guards in the backyard, and winced. Well, as normal as was possible when living with Kristoff.

I wasn’t even going to let Kristoff’s avoidance of me this morning get to me. Last night had been another revelation about him. One that had me wanting him more, not that it did me any good. The man was adamant about keeping me at bay. I could crawl into my bed and cry about him all day, or choose to have fun.

Angel strolled into the kitchen. “You have a visitor.” He snatched a Danish from my plate.

I perked up. “Tommie?”

A guy sauntered in wearing a trendy red suit. He was in his twenties, had blue highlights, and somehow pulled it all off.

“Hi, I’m Tommie. You must be Katya.” He smiled and sized me up. “I’m here to dress you.” He sounded excited at the prospect.

“You’re not going up to her room with her,” Angel said, and took a bite of his pastry.

I rolled my eyes. “Seriously?”

“Kristoff would have my balls if he got frisky with you.” He pointed his pastry at Tommie. “Then I’d have to cut offhisballs and that would ruin your night. But more importantly, it would ruin mine, for having let your night get ruined. Get me?”

Tommie snorted. “You really don’t need to worry about that. I’m not into women. I play for your team.”

Angel gave Tommie an appreciative look. “If I were into men, I’d totally do you.” Then he winked and left.

Tommie looked dumbfounded. “Is he always like that?”

I shrugged. “Well, he’s definitely more relaxed than his twin.”

“There’stwoof him?”

We went up to my room and Tommie gawked at the surroundings. “I thought Jazzy’s place had tight security, but this place tops that by a mile.”

“Yeah, we’re, um…” This was exactly why I had no one over. I didn’t know what to tell him.

He winked. “No need to explain. I know what Kristoff did for Jazzy. To me, he’s a hero. I don’t give a crap about the rest of the stories.”

I halted in my tracks. “What he did for Jazzy?”

“Did I say something I shouldn’t have?”

“No one tells me anything around here,” I grumbled as I pushed open the door to my room.

“It’s no big deal,” Tommie hastened to explain. “Jazzy was in a rough spot, and Kristoff helped her out.”

I was sure there was more to that story, but I let it go. There was no need to grill the guy.

Tommie got straight to work, descending on the boxes of apparel and pulling out one outfit after another.

He held up a dress for me. Then put it back. “You’d be lost in all those beads,” he said. He pulled out another one and winced. “Pearls? What was that woman thinking?”

“That woman?”

“The personal shopper,” he explained. “Since this was a last-minute project, I left it to her. Next time we’ll go together.”

I smiled at how he casually mentioned there would be a next time.

He took out his phone and the next moment, “I Want to Break Free” started to play. I smiled at his choice of song.
