Tommie pulled a face. “Yeah, that didn’t go so well. See, I kind of vomited before I had a chance to ask. It could’ve been worse, though.”

“How could that have possibly gone any worse”

He glared. “If I’d have puked on his army boots, for example. Luckily for me, I have great reflexes. The second I felt things coming up, I ran as fast as I could to the bathroom and made it just in time. You didn’t answer my question, by the way. Why the sad look?” He gestured at me with a frown.

I put my mug down. “It’s not just the whole Kristoff kicking me to the curb thing. I need a change in my life.”

In a way, nothing had changed. Most people in college were still avoiding me, afraid that they’d catch a disease if they hung around me for too long. Like when I was a kid. During my teens, some people didn’t like hanging around a kid who had cancer. Now it was because of mob connections. To be honest, I still preferred the latter to the former.

“What kind of change?” Tommie asked, as he buttered his sourdough bread.

“I want to live in the dorms.”

He gave me a look. “Why would you want to leave a mansion filled with hot men to live in a tiny room where you’ll be surrounded by pimpled coeds?” He pointed his knife at the table. “And not to mention the food. You do know students live on noodles and mac ‘n cheese, right? The microwave would be your best friend.”

That was one way to look at it. It just wasn’t my way.

My phone buzzed, and I looked at the screen. “It’s from Jake.” My smile disappeared when I read his message.

“And?” Tommie asked, around a mouth full of jam. “What has he planned for your date?”

I put the phone down. “He canceled it.”

“What?”

Hot waves of rage poured down my back. I wiped my mouth on a napkin. “I need to have a talk with Kristoff.”

“Why?” Tommie asked slowly.

I gave him a tight smile. “Because apparently Jake has had a visit from a few scary looking men.” I’d never felt so humiliated in my life.

I left Tommie finishing lunch in the kitchen and made my way into the living room. “Kristoff! Kristoff Romanov, where are you!” It was empty, save for Olga.

She pointed at the back patio. I followed her lead and there he was, surrounded by Viking, Damon, and Viking’s brother, Sy. They were all huddled over a blueprint on the table.

Kristoff looked up. “Why are you yelling, Ekaterina? We live in the same house. I can hear you just fine.”

Playing innocent, was he? “I will be asking the questions here,” I snapped. “I can’t believe you sabotaged my date. I really liked Jack.”

“Jake,” Damon chimed in. “His name is Jake.”

I sent him a glare, then turned back to Kristoff. “Tell me why I can’t date him. And I want a good reason. A really, really good reason. And it better not be that you don’t like him. You don’t like anyone.”

“I don’t like him,” he admitted. “But that’s not the only reason why I don’t want him around you.”

Sy cleared his throat. “Jake is a Sagittarius. They are known to be volatile and stubborn.”

“That just won’t do,” Kristoff said.

I blinked. “Excuse me?”

“You’re a Pisces, Katya,” Sy continued. “You two don’t mix.”

My jaw dropped and I sent Sy a hurt look. He hadn’t been around much lately, but I’d always considered him a friend. “You are just as bad as them.” Feeling humiliated, I gave them my back and rushed away.

By dinnertime I still felt like a raging bull, ready to smash into something, or rather, someone. I’d cut my lunch with Tommie short, not wanting to take him down with my mood. I’d avoided the guys at dinner, sulking in my room until I couldn’t take it anymore.

I found Kristoff in his study, going over the books. He didn’t acknowledge my entrance. And why should he? Usually I came in, grabbed a book, and sat in a corner reading in comfortable silence. This time, however, I felt far from comfortable. I wasn’t going to let this go.
