“Speaking of things you’ve been keeping from me, I hear congrats are in order.” When he threw me a confused look, I rolled my eyes and said, “For your engagement. Or have you already forgotten about Annika?”

Judging by his scowl he had, and more than that, he didn’t like to be reminded of the fact.

My patient started shivering, clutching the sheets with her white fingers.

“It’s okay,” I mumbled. “You’ve caught a nasty cold. Just try to get some sleep. The doctor’s taking care of you.” Well, he would if he would ever arrive, which should be any minute.

Viking’s gaze snapped back to the object of his hatred. Though I wasn’t sure he really hated her. Would he call for a doctor if he despised the patient? Would he look at Elena as if he could barely keep his eyes from her? I doubted it.

I brushed a lock of hair from her cheek. “She’s pretty.”

“So is the devil,” Viking growled.

“Much prettier than Annika. Why oh why would you get engaged to her? She’s awful.”

“It’s business.”

“Yeah, I got that.” A knock followed on the door and the doctor entered. I gave him a smile. It wasn’t all that long ago that he’d been here for me.

“Who the hell is that?” Viking asked.

“The doctor,” I said slowly, not understanding the cause of his ire.

“He’s not touching her.”

My jaw dropped. “What?”

Viking pinned the doctor with a deadly glare. “Out.”

The doctor cleared his throat. “I’ll see myself out.”

The moment he left, Viking turned his gaze to me. “Get her another one.”

“And by ‘another,’ you mean a woman?”

His jaw clenched.

“Fine, fine. I’ll get her a female doctor. Sheesh. Since when did you become such a prude?”

I looked back at Elena and couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. She had no idea that her current state was preferable to the storm she was going to wake up in.

My patient woke up coughing her lungs out. Then the sound ceased. I wondered when she would notice me. I eyed her as she hauled herself off the bed and swayed on her feet. Another round of coughing followed.

“Damn you, Viking.” She cursed a bit and then dropped back onto the bed.

I cleared my throat and Elena froze.

“Uncle Vik can be difficult sometimes, but he’s a nice guy,” I chided. No one was insulting him on my watch.

“That hasn’t been my experience so far.” She not so covertly looked around the room.

She was searching for her clothes and the closest escape route. There was none. Even if she would make it out of the room, the house was filled with Bratva soldiers.

Clearly she realized that, because she crawled back into bed and closed her eyes.

I poured some cool water into a mug and put it to her lips. Her eyes sprung open.

“I’m Katya. Take little sips. You’ve caught quite a cold.”
