“Viking’s not home, so he won’t notice me leaving.”

“Thank you, Elena.” I swallowed the tears that clogged my throat. Tonight I went to a classmate to supposedly work on a paper, made Yuri believe I was staying there, and for what?

“Katya, please tell me you’re all right.”

“I…he…it was a bad date.”

“How bad is bad?”

Epically disastrous. “He drank too much. When I pointed that out, he took my keys and won’t give them back.”

“Sit tight. I’m on my way.”

I sent Elena my location while contemplating how to keep Kristoff from finding out about what had happened. It would be hard, if not impossible.

Twenty minutes later, a black BMW 7-series turned the corner. After my horrible night, I smiled with relief at seeing that car. It was Baran’s prized possession, and I imagined Elena stealing it right from under his nose. She was a badass.

I greeted her with my one remaining shoe in my hand. “I threw the other at his head when he refused to give back my car keys,” I explained, looking down.

“Which house is his?”

“It’s the one with the petunias.”

“Katya, look at me.” When I couldn’t meet her eyes, Elena gently tilted my head up.

I winced when her eyes turned dark. “It’s not as bad as it looks. I kicked him in the nuts.”

“He hit you.”

I shrugged. “I gave as good as I got. Um, Elena, your eyes look really…weird.”

“Get in the car and lock the doors,” she commanded. Then she opened the trunk and took out a baseball bat.

I gasped. “Oh my God, wait! You can’t!” I was just about to jump out of the car when I heard screeching tires. It was Baran in another flashy car.

I missed Josh opening the door. I missed Elena going inside Josh’ house. What I didn’t miss was Elena’s thunderous voice.

“How do you like that?” Elena screamed. “Like how it feels? Do you like how it feels?”

Mortifying didn’t even begin to describe how my night was now going.

The BMW’s passenger door was yanked open, and Baran’s face appeared.

He cut me a worried look. “You okay?”

I nodded, too upset to utter a word.

“Don’t move.” He took out his phone as he went after Elena.

I knew exactly who was at the other end of that call. I also knew what was coming, or better yet, whowas. Shivers ran down my spine, imagining Kristoff’s reaction. I was so screwed.

KRISTOFF

I was at Flux, going over the numbers with the accountant, when Viking walked in. He sat across from me with a scowl on his face; an expression which seemed to be perpetual these days. I closed the books and after noting my stance, the accountant left.

“You look like death out for a kill.”
