Svetlana’s lips turned upward into a smile. “I’m an asset of Kristoff’s. He needs me. Something I’m sure you wouldn’t understand.”

Oh, the condescension. “You might be right about that.” I smiled back. “What I do understand is that I don’t like you. Please conduct your business elsewhere, as in as far away from me as possible.”

Svetlana scoffed. “You don’t decide if I stay or go, little girl. The pakhan does.”

My back straightened. Before I could do anything more, Kristoff shot her a glare.

“You heard my wife.”

Svetlana’s mouth dropped. “You can’t be serious.”

He moved toward the chair she sat in. “As serious as a heart attack.”

She jumped up. “May I remind you that you were the one who asked me to come?”

That stung. I didn’t know what business he had with her, but I didn’t like it one bit.

“And may I remind you that this is Katya’s house, and she rules here? You don’t get to disrespect her in her own home. Not unless you want to get kneecapped.”

Svetlana gasped, and looked unsure for a second, as if wondering if he was joking.

Kristoff pointed a finger at me. “By her, by the way, not by me, because my woman can take care of herself.”

It took some effort not to smile. I loved his vote of confidence, though it was debatable whether it was the truth or not. Svetlana didn’t seem to think he was joking anymore.

With a sneer she jumped up from the chair, grabbed her bag, and dashed past me. Somewhere in the back of the house, I heard a door slam. Not only was Svetlana good at making an entrance, but the same could be said about her exits.

“I don’t think you’re her favorite employer anymore,” I remarked.

Kristoff put away his phone. “I never was.”

I wasn’t so sure about that. “She’s clearly still interested in you.”

“Svetlana is only interested in her own interests.”

“And what are you interested in?” The question escaped me before I could catch it.

He was on me in a heartbeat. His hand wrapped around the nape of my neck, and one powerful leg was between my thighs.

“Sex,” he said bluntly. “I’m interested in fucking your brains out.”

Then do it, I wanted to yell. Just fucking do it.

He nipped at my ear, making me shiver. “I can see the yearning in your eyes, Ekaterina. It’s the same thing I see every damn time I look into the mirror. But I’m not going to make it easy on you.”

I groaned and leaned into him. His body was hot like an oven, and I wanted to bask in its warmth.

His fingers trailed over my collarbone, and a finger brushed over my erect nipple.

His voice was soft when he said, “I already took a major decision concerning our relationship away from you. I won’t do it again. You want me? You take the first step.”

Dammit. How did he always seem to sense what I wanted? It would be so much easier to give in to him. Yes, I’d already decided to give this marriage a fair chance, but that didn’t mean I was prepared to take the first step. So far, my pride hadn’t let me.

I panted when his fingers continued a path over my stomach to the burning spot between my legs. He brushed a knuckle over my clit, once, twice, until I grabbed his arms so I wouldn’t fall over.

He placed the gentlest of kisses on my cheek. “As long as you remember that once you let a beast out of its cage, it’s impossible to put him back in, unless you are prepared to kill him.”

Oh, I didn’t want to kill him, but he just might do me in, killing me by weaponized sexual frustration.
