“I don’t think she’s plotting to escape again,” Baran said. “Have you not seen the stuff she’s ordered for her cat? That kitten is staying put, which means so is Katya.”

That cat hated my guts, and hissed whenever I came anywhere in his vicinity. But if he kept Katya here, I’d worship him like they did in the old days.

“Then why that call?” I pondered out loud.

Damon shrugged. “The call lasted less than a minute. Not exactly long enough to plot or plan anything. It’s more likely she asked something from Onyx.”

Like that time when she asked for her aid in a damn hotel heist.

“You know you could easily stop worrying about this,” Baran said.

I scowled at him. Surely, the bastard probably had some pool going on when we would make up. Which explained his ‘caring advice.’

Yet I asked, “Meaning?”

“Make herwantto stay, of course. Or did you really think saving a cat for her would be enough? I mean, it was a brilliant move to get her to talk to you again, but I don’t think it’s enough.”

Once again, I wanted to choke someone. “And since when are you an expert on women? If I recall correctly, and I always do, your own brother whisked your wife away to save her from you because you had her locked up in your penthouse.”

Baran scowled. “I had to make a point.”

“So you say…How exactly did that work out for you?”

He showed me his ring finger. “Pretty well, actually. I still wear a wedding ring.”

I hadn’t even thought about wedding rings. My gaze snapped back to the screen. I had, and still was, busy with plotting the demise of my father and his family.

The door opened and Katya’s head peeked inside. My dark heart skipped a beat. It was the first time since our fallout that she voluntarily visited the library.

“Oh…” She halted in her tracks. “I just wanted to get a book.”

I nodded and looked at my men. They immediately made themselves scarce.

Katya frowned at the screen. “Who’s that woman?”

I realized that Evie Ryan’s face was still plastered all over the computer screen.

“She seems familiar somehow,” Katya continued when I didn’t react. There was an edge to her voice now.

I clicked the image away. Katya crossed her arms in front of her chest and gave me a look I couldn’t quite decipher.

“She’s no one.”

Katya dropped into her usual chair across my desk. My lip curled up. A sense of rightness settled over me and it was only now that I realized how much it had vexed me that she hadn’t visited this place.

She scowled at me. “She’s someone, if you’ve been checking her out on a big screen.”

I blinked. She sounded…jealous. Her possessiveness over the guys, our housekeeper Olga, and her friends was legendary. I’d just never imagined that her love and loyalty would extend to me.

I leaned back in my chair, my mood improving by the minute.

“It’s no one you need to concern you with.” I wasn’t used to explaining myself to anyone, and least of all to someone who wasn’t in the business. Katya would understand.

She smiled, though it didn’t reach her eyes. Her two gorgeous green orbs spat fire at me.

“I don’t need to concern myself about it when my husband is staring at another woman?”

Evie was hardly a woman. Right now, she was a shell of herself, institutionalized by her loving father for a drug addiction.
