How did she not know the power she held over me? I’d kill anyone who dared to threaten her, including myself. But I hadn’t forgotten about her hotel heist yet.

“Evie’s in rehab right now.”

Her face fell. “Oh, right. How could I forget? It was all over the news. All the more reason to introduce yourself to her. Maybe it would help.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell Katya that Evie’s drug problem wasn’t real. That her father had put her in a facility as a publicity stunt in his campaign. One of the pillars of his platform was ‘the war on drugs.’ The man had locked away his own daughter, simply because she’d had the unfortunate luck to be caught on camera with a joint. By now, she was probably so full of pills that she was a zombie.

“She’s not my problem.” I gave her a stern look. “She isn’t yours either.”

“Sure.”

Her smile told me she understood, but her eyes told me that we would see about that.

Fuck.

10.

KATYA

Monday morning, I went back to college as if nothing in my life had changed, though everything had. I’d learned a few things about myself over the past few days. Such as, I had no control whatsoever over my body when it came to Kristoff. It simply didn’t matter that I was still pissed at him, or that there was an emotional gap between us, filled with resentment and anger. None of it mattered when I was in his arms. Perhaps it was because at night, during those dark hours where he corrupted my body in such a delicious way, it was easy to pretend and hide in the shadows. Those shadows were a direct contrast to how I felt right now, driving to SFU, sitting in the driver’s seat with the sun shining on my face. Yuri sat next to me, his eyes zeroed in on his phone. I felt like he was a bit distracted.

“What are you looking at?” I asked as I took a left.

“Nothing.” He didn’t look up from his phone.

Curious. A few minutes later I stopped at a red light and couldn’t contain my curiosity any longer. I glanced over at his phone.

He angled it away from me, but he was too late.

I grinned. “Following Evie Ryan on social media? I didn’t peg you for a socialite lover.” Yuri was more into easy coeds than senator’s daughters. Especially one who had recently been in the news so much for a drug addiction.

His lips thinned. “She just got admitted.”

I didn’t understand his fascination, but shared anyway. “She’s much prettier in real life. I saw her at dinner once.” Had it been less than a week ago that Kristoff took me to a posh restaurant? We’d encountered her and a swarm of reporters.

“I know.”

I blinked. “You do?”

He immediately looked out the window, as if he’d gotten caught. The way he’d sounded…It was almost as if his interest was for some other reason than Evie being a gorgeous blonde. Then it hit me.

“She’s a person of interest to Kristoff, isn’t she?”

Yuri sighed, looking back at me. “I can’t talk business with you, you know that.”

That wasn’t a denial. “Fine.” I’d find out one way or another anyway.

I parked close to my dorm and killed the engine. Yuri put his hand on mine. He looked slightly sheepish.

“Um, I know things between you and the boss are a bit weird right now,” he started.

“I’m not going to run away,” I said.

He gave me a dubious look. “Just don’t do it on my watch,” he said, clearly not taking my word on it.

I couldn’t blame him. I still wasn’t sure about which way to go with Kristoff. There were two angels on my shoulders, each pulling me in a different direction. Clearly, Lucifer’s spawn, the one I equated with lust and sin, loved my current decision. In fact, I woke up just this morning fantasizing about all the things I wanted to do to Kristoff’s lickable abs. The other angel, who looked surprisingly prim and proper, threatened to revoke my feminist card if I gave in to him too quickly.

When Yuri kept giving me a stern look, I rolled my eyes.
