I shrugged. “What does it matter? She just wants you to leave her alone and I think you should. I mean, women like her are rare. She’s like a gazelle, she should be able to roam and run free.”

“I do love a nice gazelle steak,” Angel declared, his teeth flashing.

Kristoff kissed my neck and murmured into my ear. “Just humor us, Ekaterina. What words did Onyx use, exactly.”

I dug around in my memory. “She said ‘Tell those two crazies that if they don’t stop cyberstalking me, I’m going to defenestrate them.’ And there was an exclamation mark at the end.”

A shocked expression crossed the twins’ faces, which was funny because despite them looking exactly alike, they wereso very different. It was rare to catch them frozen like exact replicas.

Kristoff’s chest shook as he laughed. “That woman is better than I’d thought. Perhaps I should hire her.”

I looked up at him. “Why? What’s so special about defenestrating anyway? To be fair, I have no idea what it means.”

“It means to throw someone out of a window,” Kristoff explained, still with a rare smile on his face.

I loved seeing him like this, enjoying himself and almost carefree.

“I don’t think I’ve ever used that word before,” I admitted.

His smile turned into a grin. “I doubt many people have. It’s one of those word-of-the-day calendar kind of words.”

The kind of calendar the twins used. Not a day went by without them competing over who could use the word of the day first in normal conversation.

“It’s today’s word of the day,” Damon snapped. “That’s strike two.”

“She’s good,” Angel said.

“Because she knows a difficult word?” I asked, insulted on Onyx’s behalf though I wasn’t sure why.

“You’re just pissed she won,” Angel said to his brother.

Damon traced his thumb over his bottom lip. “No, I’m pissed because she’s been spying into our house."

Kristoff put his hands on my hips. “Their word of the day calendar is in their kitchen, on the fridge.”

I was surprised to hear that. “Damon, our resident technology freak, uses paper instead of an app?”

“It was part of their homeschooling, and it stuck with them.”

Well, wasn’t that a coincidence. Onyx had used that word today just when—I finally connected the dots. Crap.

“I shouldn’t have said anything,” I mumbled.

Kristoff pulled me away from the twins and out of the gym. “Wasn’t that exactly what she asked of you?”

I pursed my lips. “I’m not sure if I was supposed to quote her. If I hadn’t, they wouldn’t have found out that she’s hacked into their camera feed.”

“She knew exactly what she was doing.”

I put my hands around his neck. “It was a challenge then,” I guessed.

“It sure the fuck was.”

I was afraid I might have just caused Onyx to lose.
