She shrugged, clearly not taking my word for it. The woman had been with him forever and she ruled this house. Strange as it was, it did make me feel a bit better if she didn’t seem to think anything was wrong with him.

Ten minutes later, Kristoff walked into the dining room and joined me at the table. The twins joined us right after that. I wished Evie would be here as well, but I knew she preferred to be holed up in her room. I had hope that someday soon she would come out of her cave and join humanity again though. Sadly, it didn’t look like today was that day.

Kristoff sat at the head of the table, flanked by the twins. Olga had piled hash browns, pancakes, and fruit onto their plates. Angel got buttered croissants, which explained her sudden love for French cuisine. A style she usually loathed. Just like any other style, all of which weren’t ‘Polish enough.’

The second Kristoff coughed, all eyes went to him. Angel immediately grabbed his plate and moved one chair over. Damon shook his head in disgust.

“What?” Angel asked, indignantly. “My mother didn’t put me on this earth to die from a bacterial infection.”

“The flu will hardly kill you,” I said, while picking up a croissant.

“I don’t have the fucking flu,” Kristoff growled.

Olga hurried to him with a large cup of coffee.

“Shouldn’t you give him tea with lemon, honey, and ginger?” I asked, while sipping my English Breakfast tea.

Kristoff sent me a scathing look, which I answered with a wink. He glowered as he took a gulp from his drink.

Damon sized Kristoff up. “You’ll live,” he declared

“It’s not him I’m worried about,” Angel said snidely. When I cocked a brow, he explained, “Our fearless leader has a…way of communicating when he’s not feeling too hot. It makes the men avoid him like the plague.”

Kristoff gave him a look. “First of all, youare a damn plague. And secondly, if you continue like that, I’m going to show you some damn fucking heat.”

Angel gave me a pointed look. “See what I mean?”

“I’m getting there,” I said cheekily. “It sounds as if you speak from experience.” I’d only been with Kristoff and the rest of the guys for four years, but it felt like so much longer. There were days I couldn’t remember not having them in my life. It was also why I sometimes forgot that they’d had a whole life together before I came around.

“Oh yeah,” Angel said, ignoring Kristoff’s grunt. “There was a flu outbreak a decade ago, and this one got sick. Mind you, he had crossed the icy plains of freezing Siberia, not calling sick in once, but then gets felled by the common flu. It was embarrassing, really.”

Kristoff’s lip pulled up in a sneer. “One day I’m going to choke you with one of those silk ties you love so much.”

“While I do love the occasional choke play, you’re not my type,” Angel quipped.

“I’m going to flog you first,” Kristoff threatened. “And decorate you with all those nasty clamps you have for your subs. Then I’m going to shove a ginger root—”

I cleared my throat. “Please, I’m trying to eat here.”

Angel leaned back, enjoying the show that came with his cappuccino. “Too bad, it was just getting interesting.”

“Speaking of interesting,” Damon said, looking at me. “Have you heard from our future sub lately?”

“No,” I said warily, wondering why he would bring up Onyx now.

Kristoff coughed again, but this time no one dared say a word. “I heard she fled Europe. I wonder where she’s headed next.”

His words were casual, but his eyes said,I’m going to win that bet.

“She’s a world traveler,” I snubbed. No way was I admitting defeat just yet.

Damon’s eyes were hard as granite. “If she reaches out to you while on our turf, you can’t take her in like you did with Evie.”

“I wouldn’t do that,” I denied, refusing to admit that was exactly what I’d planned, to hide her right under their noses.

He looked reassured, and peeked at Kristoff. “Speaking of planning, we have a meeting in an hour. You gonna be fit?”

“You like to breathe?” Kristoff asked silkily.
