Dr. Pathak looked shaken and unsettled.

Concerned, Sitara went to her. “What happened, Dr. Pathak? Is everything okay?” she asked.

Dr. Pathak shook her head. “Someone broke into our lab. They ransacked both our offices and they left a cryptic message. I got an alert from the police.”

Dr. Pathak showed her the pictures of their ransacked offices. And also, the photo of a paper containing a typed message.

You can’t hide it for long. We are coming after you and won’t let you escape.

Sitara was shocked. She didn’t know what the message meant, but it sounded like a threat. “Let’s head back.”

Dr. Pathak shook her head. “No, Sitara. You can’t ruin your vacation. You need this break.”

Sitara frowned. “But we need to find out who broke in and what they were looking for.”

Dr. Pathak nodded. “I will leave right away and take care of it. But you should stay here because there is no guarantee that whoever broke into the lab won’t break into our homes.”

Sitara felt shaken at the thought of coming across those goons at her place. “But what about you, Dr. Pathak? It isn’t safe for you either.”

“The police offered me security.” Dr. Pathak replied. “And since I live in a gated and secured apartment, it’s harder for anyone to break-in.”

“What are they looking for, Dr. Pathak?” Aarav’s deep voice cut into the conversation.

Sitara didn’t know Aarav was listening or paying attention.

“I’m not sure, Commander Rathod, “Dr. Pathak said in a worried tone. “The lab has many research papers. It could be either information on those research papers or it could have been a random break in.”

“And the message?” he asked.

Dr. Pathak looked shaken. “I’m not sure what it means either.”

“Is there a chance that the people who broke in might know that you two are supposed to be on a cruise?” he asked.

Dr. Pathak frowned. “I’m not sure.”

“In that case, I suggest the two of you get security until the police investigate. I know of a company that can offer personal security. I will call them and let them know you will be arriving.”

Dr. Pathak frowned as she shook her head. “But I prefer Sitara to continue on the vacation.”

There was a pause. “In that case, I can stay,” he said. “I can offer her security until the cruise is over.”

Dr. Pathak looked confused for a moment. But then, she slowly nodded. “Oh! That’s an excellent idea. I feel so relieved hearing Sitara can continue on the cruise safely with you.”

Sitara was stunned.

“No!” Sitara shook her head vehemently. “There is no need for that. And I’m sure Commander Rathod has many more important things to do than accompany me on the cruise.”

“Actually, I’m quite free for the next two weeks,” Aarav drawled.

Sitara wanted to strangle the jerk.

“Good!” said Dr. Pathak. “That’s settled then. I feel much better knowing Commander Rathod will be here protecting you.”

“But there’s no need for any protection—”

“Please, Sitara,” Dr. Pathak implored. “Just stay here safe while I ensure everything is fine. It’s barely two weeks.”

Before Sitara could say anything, Dr. Pathak looked at Aarav. “I hope you don’t mind Commander Rathod.”
