He sat next to her and held her hand in his. Even though the warmth of his hand reassured her, she felt the need to brace herself.

“Dr. Pathak has been arrested this morning,” he said.

Shock ripped through her. “What!”

“She had confessed to having your lab and home ransacked along with planning attacks on you with an intent to either kidnap you or kill you.”

“No, it’s not possible,” Sitara whispered.

“Dr. Pathak had also confessed to being responsible for Dheeraj’s boat accident two years ago.”

Sitara felt as though she was punched in the stomach by the news. She shook her head in denial. “N-no, she won’t do that. Why would she do that?”

“Because Dheeraj had found out what she was about to do,” he said. “Dr. Pathak had made a deal with an international company to sell information on your research that could be used as a bioweapon.”

The word jolted her. “A b-bioweapon…”

“Yes.”

Her shocked mind recalled the discussion she had with Dheeraj nearly three years ago. It was regarding one of the earlier prototypes of Eureka displaying properties that could potentially be used as a bioweapon. Dheeraj had agreed, so they got rid of the research findings to avoid potential misuse in wrong hands. They hadn’t told anyone at that time and it was soon forgotten.

How did Dr. Pathak find out?

“Money and greed weren’t her only motives,” Aarav continued. “Dr. Pathak also confessed that she was driven by professional jealousy. She felt she deserved the accolades and awards that you earned because she was the one to mentor you for your research.”

Dr. Pathak had been her mentor for over the five years. But not once did she show any outward resentment.

“I can’t believe this,” she whispered, feeling too shocked to believe it or even feel hurt.

“There is audio, video and written confession from Dr. Pathak.”

Sitara felt devastated to hear the woman who was her mentor was responsible for Dheeraj’s death.

“A-and Preeti?” she asked.

“Your assistant has been cleared. There is no suspicion on her and nothing to prove links between her and Dr. Pathak.”

Relief hit her. Preeti was her dear friend whom she trusted.

I trusted Dr. Pathak too.

She still couldn’t believe that someone she trusted and considered to be her mentor would go to such lengths because of greed and jealousy. She desperately wanted to meet Dr. Pathak and beg for answers.

“The threat is now gone,” he said. “You are no longer in danger. The organization that Dr. Pathak tried to make a deal with has also been dealt with.”

Relief hit her again as Aarav wouldn’t be in danger because of her.

His hand continued to hold hers. “There is something else I need to tell you, Tara.” he said.

She looked at him and saw him watching her with an intense look. “I love you,” he said. “No matter what, I need you to know that.”

His words sank deeply into her heart, but something about his expression and the grim tone of his words made her feel worried.

“I love you too, Aarav. But what is going on? Please tell me—” Before she could finish, there was a sound of footsteps from inside the house.

A bolt of fear rose inside her thinking there was an intruder and that she and Aarav were at risk. She sprang up, wanting to pull Aarav out of the house and call security.

She tugged at his hand. “Aarav, someone’s in there. We should go—” she broke off when she saw a man with a thick beard and shaggy hair coming towards them.
