She smiles and raises her voice. “Good morning, ladies. I have your scones and coffee ready to go.”

“Do my eyes deceive me? Is that Lia Gray?”

I widen my eyes at Amelia and she mouths, “Sorry,” before taking off to the back.

Add Amelia to my hit list.

I paste a smile on my face and turn around to face the Poker Posse.

This quartet of women—all of them eighty if they’re a day—dress in track suits, run the town’s Silver Sneakers group, and could hustle the best poker player in Vegas out of everything they own.

And apparently have a standing order at the Sweet Spot.

“Mrs. Casteel, so good to see you.” I lean down and kiss the cheek of the woman in turquoise.

“It’s so good to see you, sweetie.”

Clarice—in head-to-toe yellow—pushes forward with a frown. “I expected you to be more pale. Living in that city that does nothing but rain.”

Before I can say anything, EllaMae and AnnaMae—twin sisters dressed in lavender and pink respectively, sidle up to either side of Jake. “Hello, Jake. Aren’t you looking handsome today?” AnnaMae says.

Jake smiles, seemingly unaffected by the two old ladies checking him out. “Mornin’, ladies. Beautiful day, isn’t it?”

EllaMae giggles and he gives her a wink. I swear she’s going to melt into a puddle right at his feet.

Our eyes meet and I give him an “are you serious?”look. He just smiles that sexy smile that makesmewant to be a puddle at his feet.

“I hear you two are working together on the Christmas festival’s Santa shop,” Faye says.

My wide eyes meet Jake’s.How the hell does she know already?

He shrugs and smiles down at AnnaMae, who’s stroking his arm like it’s a cat.

I bite my lip to keep from laughing and turn my attention to Faye. “Uh, yes. We’re going to turn his shop into a winter wonderland.”

“Jake, my car’s making a funny sound. If I bring it over, do you think you could check it out for me?” EllaMae asks. “I think it might need a proper…inspection with your wrench.”

Oh. My. God.

Did she really just say that?

“Hey.” AnnaMae pushes at her sister. “That was my line.”

Jake looks to me for help, his eyes wide. I roll my lips inward, trying like hell not to bust a gut laughing.

“For God’s sake, you two pervs,” Clarice grumbles. “Knock it off. He’s not interested in you old bats.”

Amelia comes out with four pink boxes stacked high under one arm and a drink carrier in the other. “Here we go, ladies.”

“Thank God,” Clarice mutters under her breath.

You ain’t kidding, sister.

Each of the ladies takes a box and a coffee and shuffles toward the door. Faye stays behind to pay the bill.

As she goes to leave, she leans close to me and says, “But he is interested in you.” She pats my arm with a wink and leaves.

What?
