I’ve tried so hard to forget, but after being around him for the last week or so, he’s drawn me back in like a magnet.

And I’m tired of fighting the pull.

I lift my chin. “Then don’t hold back.”

His eyes darken and his smile is wicked just before he crushes his lips to mine.

My mind spins. Everything from “What the hell are you doing? Stop kissing him!” to “I can’t believe I’m kissing Jake Henderson again” to “I need to feel his cock inside me now” runs through my head.

With our lips fused together, he walks me backward until my back hits the wall. He tilts his head and tunnels his large hands into my hair, deepening the kiss. His tongue slides against mine, coaxing me to give him more.

I respond in kind.

A moan escapes me when he pins me to the wall with his hips, his cock like a steel rod against my belly. His mouth travels down my neck, where he drops hot, open-mouthed kisses on my overheated skin.

“Fuck, I’ve missed the taste of your skin.”

“Jake…” I pant out, barely able to breathe from the all-consuming lust whipping through me so hard it hurts…but in a good way.

His hands are everywhere. One ends up in the waistband of my jeans, his knuckles brushing against my stomach. The dichotomy of the warmth of his fingers and the roughness of his skin causes my belly to quiver. The sensation leaves me breathless. His other hand reaches behind my knee and lifts my leg up to rest on his thigh.

My hands search for purchase, pulling at his shirt as he moves into the space between my legs. I want to rip every stitch of clothing off him so I can see what I’ve been missing for more than a decade.

The shrill sound of an old-fashioned telephone fills the air where our moans and panting once were.

We freeze, as though unsure what to do.

“Son of a bitch.” With a deep sigh, Jake steps back and my leg slides off his hip. With my back still against the wall, my chest heaves like I’ve swum an Olympic-sized pool in one breath.

He pulls his phone out of his back pocket, and his grip is so tight, I worry he will end up crushing it into pieces.

“Hey, Mom.” He runs a hand through his hair and looks at me, mouthing, “I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, I’m fine. I was just”—he looks up at me and grinsthatgrin—“busy.”

He’s quiet for a moment, rubbing his eye with the heel of his free hand, before saying, “Yeah, I can do that.”

I straighten my clothes and motion to him that I’m leaving. His eyes widen and he shakes his head, holding up a finger. “Mom, hang on a second.”

He holds the phone to his chest. “Give me a second to get her off the phone and I’ll take you home.”

I inch my way to the door. “No, it’s okay. It’s just a block or so away.”

His brows draw down. “I don’t like you walking alone in the dark.”

My heart tugs and I smile. “I’ll be fine. I promise. It’s Madison Ridge, and I’m related to most of the town law enforcement.”

He lowers his chin. “We’re not done.”

Yeah, we are. The moment has passed and I’m not sure we’ll get it back.

It was impulsive and reckless and I have no business getting tangled up with anyone right now, but especially not with Jake. There’s too much…everything with him.

It’s just made worse now that I know the man kisses better than before. His kisses alone make me want to take my rule book, pour gasoline on it, and light a match.

I can’t do that. I’m only here temporarily, and my feelings for Jake, for better or worse, are permanent.

“Good night, Jake.”
