“I know, I’m still here, aren’t I?” Sophie said it and realized that was exactly where she wanted to be. There, with Phantom. Whether he was fucking her silently with a knife against her throat or lying in wait for him to smite down an enemy. Covered in whatever these scars were. She wanted to be right there alongside him.

Colt stepped in front of her. He put a hand on her shoulder and looked her square in the eyes.

“You aren’t just a little sugar princess, are you? Icing sugar dusted on top of a fucking cake. No. You’re a fucking blowtorch, one of those little butane culinary flamethrowers. I don’t want to be in the kitchen when you blow up, Sugar.”

Sophie raised her chin proudly. “Be careful you don’t get burned then,” Sophie retorted.

Colt smirked at her. “Scorch that sugar and turn it to caramel. He’ll be lucky to have you.”

Sophie blushed at the compliment and smiled genuinely at Colt. He was such a dad figure, he was born for this kind of role, he was a great President.

He stepped back and cleared his throat. “Okay, look, we’re also here about the man who tried to kill you.”

Sophie gulped. “I’ve no idea who he is. I’ve never seen him before,” she said rather quickly.

“You sure you don’t know him, Sophie? You’ve never met him?” Colt asked.

She shook her head, slightly caught off guard by him suddenly using her name. “I honestly have no idea why he would have come for me, except an opportune robbery-”

Colt cut her off. “No, I thought as much, but somehow you’re involved, Sophie. You heard of the SoCal Demonios? Mexican drug cartel? It’s a fucking web, all connected-”

Sophie thought back to Phantom tugging the man’s shirt open, exposing the strange little crying woman mark on the man’s chest. “Sorry,” Sophie spoke louder, Colt looked surprised. “I am not involved-”

Colt let a thin smile spread to his lips. “Oh, but you are now, Sophie, you are involved with Phantom, you just told us as much.”

Sophie huffed. “So how is Phantom involved then?”

Colt frowned. “This is what we are trying to work out… he’s got a matching mark on his chest, haven’t you noticed it while you were fucking?”

She thought back to how he stopped her hands on his torso. “He’s…” Sophie bit her lip. “Demonios, too?”

“Former member, before he came to us, I don’t think he had much choice about joining up… there’s a guy who might have some answers, a driver, from the Demonios, we are all hoping he wakes up from a coma, Phantom doesn’t know he’s alive, he thinks he killed the guy, if you want to unlock Phantom’s past, he is the key…”

Sophie had a thousand questions and retorts on her lips but at that moment the bell on the door tinkled again. Sophie looked up. The three bikers looked around.

In strode the owner of the pharmacy next door. Immaculate blue-gray suit, hair slicked neatly, a cocky smile on his face.

But then the man saw the bikers. He froze. Terrified.

“Ah shit,” he muttered, looking around like a rabbit seeking an escape route. The bikers raised themselves to their full height. Colt folded his arms over his chest. Lyle cracked his neck and his knuckles. Ash smirked.

“Ah, Mr. Rafferty. Fancy seeing you here.” Colt smiled, like a tiger seeing a little mouse.

“I... shit... I didn’t know you’d be here,” Mr. Rafferty said, swiping a hand through his hair.

“Yeah, go figure. We didn’t mean to be here, just welcoming a new business to town, just getting to know Sophie here...”

“I... yes, the coffee is great, the ice cream, too, all non dairy... save the world, one vegan ice cream at a time,” his voice faded off lamely. They all stared at him.

“Yeah so, anyway, we’re doing the job you signed up for, we’ll be coming to pick up the goods tomorrow night, as originally planned, and you will be there to load the van, do you hear me?” Colt said, his voice now sharp as broken glass.

Rafferty shook his head. “It’s nothing personal, I swear… it’s been a difficult time… Okay? Family matter,” Rafferty snapped back.

Colt frowned. “What do you mean? You don’t have a family.”

Rafferty swept a hand through his hair and threw Colt a hunted look. “Great, you’ve been spying on me?”

“Course.” Ash shrugged.
