Page 68 of Trapping His Queen

“Let me know if you need a book or anything that you can’t reach. I’m at your disposal.” With a twinkle in his eye, he walked over to his desk and sat down.

I strolled around, looking at the many books.

There was a slight knock.

“Enter.”

Roman appeared. He glanced over at me, and I noticed how his eyes were missing the warmth of youth. That really made me sad.

“Did you get the information I needed?” Alexie asked him.

“I can give you an update another time.” He turned to walk away, but Alexie cleared his throat, stopping him in his tracks.

“Sit.”

With one command, the kid reluctantly sank down into a chair and waited.

Alexie’s nostrils flared. “I said I wanted this information as soon as possible. Why are you hesitating?”

“I figured it could wait until you were alone, sir.”

“Did I ask you to do that?”

Was I the only one who heard the warning in his tone?

Roman turned red. “No, sir.”

“Well then, let’s hear it.” Alexie’s tone left no room for argument.

Roman looked at me once more before clearing his throat. “The Devils are looking for Sloane.”

He might as well have said the world was ending. I couldn’t stop the uncontrollable trembling that arose from the news. While imprisoned with Alexie, it was almost easy to forget that they existed. They were nightmares but intangible. Now I felt the room closing in on me. They would find me. They always did.

Roman was suddenly at my side, moving me toward the couch. I leaned on him for support. It was as if I couldn’t draw in air. My legs weakened. I feared I might actually faint. He carefully helped me to the couch.

“Well, they will not find her,” Alexie growled.

I looked at the man who had taken me from the club. I could see a possessive gleam glowing in his dark eyes. He looked every bit the monster he’d shown me he could be. I felt myself growing cold and drowning in the depths of his ice gaze, like I had slipped beneath the ice.

“..we could blow them up,” Roman was saying as he returned to his seat.

Wait, what?

“I’m not saying the idea doesn’t have merit,” Alexie remarked with a wave of his hand, “but it would also have a lot of casualties. That might bring attention to us.”

Roman shrugged. “They all deserve to die. We may as well be the ones squeezing the trigger.”

I shivered thinking about the kind of man he was bound to grow up to be. A ruthless, cunning killer was forming right before my eyes, and I couldn’t lift a finger to stop it from happening.

“Sloane?”

Clearly, I missed something in my musing. “What was that?” I croaked.

“I said, what do you think we should do about this problem?”

“Ugh…” I felt like a deer in headlights. Was this some kind of trap? “I don’t know.” I ducked my head, hoping that would be a good enough answer. It wasn’t.

“You’ve got to have some kind of idea about how you want them to be destroyed. Come on, you can tell us.” His dark gaze penetrated every pore in my body. “Surely you want to punish them for the way they hurt you.”
