For a few seconds, I just looked at her. Could this have been happening? Cassie was explaining tomeabout it all? She was worried about whatIthought of her and what had occurred? I couldn’t have been more surprised.

“Oh, I didn’t think that at all. Seriously. Like I said, I doubt he spoke of me really, and what happened between you and me felt more like a…surprise.”

“A surprise.” She sat with the word for a few moments. “Yes, I like that. It was a surprise.”

“A pleasant one.” I grinned at her, and I could see she was coloring a little more under my gaze.

Her usual confident demeanor was not there, and I was intrigued. I thought Cassie would never be cowed by anything.

“I’m glad you think so,” she said, cocking an eyebrow at me, making me laugh.

And then she’s back.

“So, what did you think about it? Or am I going to have to pull a compliment out of you,” I said, the wine already getting to me, me already making plans to taxi home.

“No one pulls anything out of me, Doc,” she said, looking confident, a little smile on her face.

God, she was sexy.

“Unless I want them to.” Her tone was seductive, confident, and enticing as hell.

CASSIE

What are you doing? You are flirting, Cassie Williams. Why in God’s name are you fucking flirting with this guy? Why are you even here?

Miss Logical Scientist was raging at me, but horny, wanted-this-guy-like-no-other side was really enjoying herself. I mean, what could it hurt? A little flirtation never hurt anyone, right? I could flirt, drink wine, eat delicious food, and then I could go home satisfied that I had enjoyed myself. That I’d stopped thinking about what was the logical thing to do for once and just thrown caution to the wind.

But you know it won’t end there…

I pushed that thought away. Despite my rather rebellious nature in comparison to my friends, I still constructed my life in ways that made me feel comfortable. In ways that kept me safe and standing strong while everyone else had to adjust to me. But with Brad, I felt like stepping outside those ways and those lines. I felt like asking for trouble because it felt good.

Brad leaned forward, and I saw that a little lock of brown hair fell a bit down on his forehead. It was such an intimate observation, and it drew my gaze. I wanted to push it away, to touch my fingertips to his skin and feel again that hardened muscled body. The body that had given me such incredible bliss and by the mere movements of his magic fingers.

“I see. Well, it’s good you have rules, Miss Williams,” He leaned back again and gave me a teasing smile.

A smile that was continually getting my heart rate up. Even though he’d seemed nervous at the beginning of this…whatever this was, he was totally back to his old self now. Confident, lithe, manly, everything that was making my feminine side stand up and sing.

“I always thought so.” I tried to play it cool even though I felt horny as hell. “Tell me, you wanted to know so much about Friday night, but I never got to ask you.”

“Go on, then. What do you want to know?”

I watched his mouth as he sipped from his wine glass. “Well, I could ask you the very same question. Why did you kiss me back? Why did you let me?”

He quirked a brow, and the left side of his mouth lifted in a smirk. “Is this a trick question?”

“No, it’s a fair one. I do not think it’s true that men will kiss or fuck anything that moves. There is more to it than that. So, why did you let me bring you back? I could tell you’d regretted it at first, and then…the rest is history.”

“Is it?” His eyes flashed at me, that lovely deep blue, both cold and hot at the same time. “I think regret is a strong word. I would never regret something that felt like that. Or the way it felt the next time.”

The way he spoke send a frisson of heat down my spine. If his voice could do what his fingers could do to me, unraveling me from the inside, dear God, I shuddered to think what his cock would do to me.

“Then why?” I pushed again, needing to know. I had never asked a man this question before, but I had also not experienced a man pulling back before after he made the first move. “Why kiss me again?”

“Because I wanted to.” He echoed my very same words, and this time, there was no urgency or anger like I had used when we’d spoken.

There was only firm confidence and determination. His gaze never left mine after he spoke, and my body threatened to melt into the seat if he would look at me like that much longer. The waiter entered with our food, and Brad got up to move his chair a little closer to mine.
