When I got in, I was grateful that Brad was already in his office. I hoped I could busy myself in the lab for enough time that he wouldn’t see me out and about. But lunch would come soon, and I would have to leave to go get some.

Maybe he’ll ask you to lunch? My traitorous heart hoped.

Why was I caring about this guy as if I wanted to see him again? As if I thought it was a good idea to keep doing this. Sooner or later, we’d regret it; I was sure of it. And there was still the matter of Jason!

If something was to happen between me and Brad, then Jason would eventually find out. If he was trying to be back in his dad’s life, then we’d see each other too. And that sounded like the most awkward thing in the whole world. I had no interest in talking to Jason or seeing him. He’d broken my heart, and the last thing in the world I wanted to do was get close to him again.

“Hey, how was your night?” Stevie asked when I walked into the lab.

“Me? Oh good. Fine. Great.” I gave Stevie a quick smile and found my seat, opening up my notebook.

“Okay, it sounds like something’s up.” She plopped down in a stool across from her, her elbows on the table.

Slowly, I looked up. No, I could not tell Stevie about this. It would not be wise. As if the universe was listening to me and trying to find out ways to humiliate me further, my phone buzzed, and I saw Sadie had typed into our friend group.

So, any more updates on sexy boss guy and that kiss?

Stevie lifted her brows at me, waiting. “Tell me what’s going on. You’re acting weird. You have a good night last night?”

“Yeah, it was fine. You? How was your date?”

“Oh, that.” She rolled her eyes. “The guy showed up almost an hour late, and he talked endlessly about himself, the weather, and his mom.”

I scrunched up my nose. “Ew, gross.” My quasi-date had been very, very different.

“Tell me about it. Now, you aren’t getting away with it that easily. Where were you last night? I can see something’s written on your face.”

I shushed her. “It’s nothing. I just had a date of my own.” When Stevie gasped, I shot her a warning look.

She put her hand over her mouth, and when she removed it, she was grinning. I knew it was dangerous to give her any information like this, but I also knew she’d badger me until I said something. And she wasn’t wrong. Something had happened last night. Something perfect, big, sexy, hard…

Okay, it’s time to stop that.

“Oh my gosh, Cassie. I cannot remember the last time you told me you went on a date. That’s great! What’s his name? What’s his situation? I want to know everything.” I looked around at the other few scientists who were busy on their computers.

“You know we’re at work.”

“So what? This is important.” She settled, her head in her fists again as she blinked up at me with a childlike wonder. “You know you owe me deets, girl.”

“Fine. But nothing major. Like you said, I haven’t been on a real date in a long while, and I don’t know about this, so you can’t get it all in your head or anything.”

“All right, all right. Just tell me.”

I searched my brain for white lies that sounded believable as well as weren’t that far from the truth. “His name is Brian, and he’s a scientist.”

“Oooh, I like him already.” She winked. “But why didn’t you tell me about him before? Especially when I was telling you about my date?”

I shrugged. “I didn’t realize it was going to happen. But when I went out to get some food, I saw him, and he asked me. So, we went.”

The story wasn’t exactly terrible, but it sounded weird coming out of my mouth. Luckily, this time, Stevie didn’t seem to question it.

“That’s great!” She made a ‘come here’ motion with her hand. “Tell me more! Is he hot?”

Oh, fuck yes.

Stevie clapped, and I shushed her.

“Will you go out with him again?” she asked, and I hesitated.
