My cheeks flushed. Am I? Was I? I was having incredible sex with a gorgeous man who made me smile and made my insides hot and cold at the same time. But I couldn’t say that we were going out or doing anything beyond that. Besides, I’d left in such a rush yesterday after seeing my mom, that no doubt he didn’t want to see me ever again.

“I will think about it, Jason,” I said finally, glad to end the meeting. “See you around. Thanks for the coffee.”

“See you, Cassie.” He gave me another handsome smile and then turned away, walking towards his car.

I spun around, walking to my car, and I pulled out my phone. Sending a text to our text group The Siren Sisters, I wrote,

I need karaoke stat. Anyone free on a Sunday afternoon?

CHAPTER18

CASSIE

Monday morning,I had a bit of a headache, but I felt a lot more relaxed. I was in the lab in a rush, not meeting Brad on the way. We hadn’t texted either, and I was glad about that, knowing he’d likely done it because he was giving me my space. I also didn’t know what to say back to him if he did text me.

The karaoke the night before with my two best friends had helped to give me a little bit more clarity. I didn’t want Jason anymore, and I knew who I did want, even if it frightened me to death. When I’d told Jane and Sadie about how things had gone down with Brad over the weekend, they both screamed with joy.

“Yes! Go Cassie! Getting yours,” Sadie had said, pumping her fist in the air.

“Not that you’ve ever had trouble getting yours, Cassie, but I am happy for you. Can you bring him out sometime? We want to actually meet him instead of just know how he kisses from afar,” Jane had said.

I’d rolled my eyes. “Gee thanks.” I’d laughed, thinking about what it would be like to bring Brad out with everyone. “I don’t think that’d be a good idea. We can’t forget that he’s my boss.”

“You know, you could just get a new job…” Sadie said. “It could be true love! You don’t want to give that up!”

Again, I’d rolled my eyes. “You’re crazy. It’s only been a few days!”

“But the sex was good, right?” Jane had asked with a grin, her hand rubbing her stomach.

“Oh God, yeah,” I’d said honestly, unable to hide the truth even a little bit.

“Good. That’s a great way to start.”

I didn’t tell them about meeting with Jason, though. I wasn’t sure how they’d take it. When I hurried into the lab, I worked for a few hours before lunch, and I spotted Brad on my way out for lunch.

“Hey,” he said, with a bright smile, and I slowed, unable to keep the smile from my face.

“Hey.” I put my hands behind my back, keeping my distance from him. There were people around, and in that small of a lab, things spread fast.

Last year, two scientists had made out in one of the closets after hours, and the whole thing had come out the next day. I knew my secret with Brad would be coming out sooner rather than later, but I wasn’t ready yet. I didn’t want anyone to think I was just using him to get ahead, to gain the best and most prestigious projects.

“Camilla’s coming by today, and she wanted to show you something she’s been working on at school. Would that be all right?”

I was close enough to see his eyes crinkle at the corners as he smiled. I wasn’t sure why, but it made him even more handsome, even more human, though I’d seen what a godlike body he had.

“Of course. No problem. What time?”

“3 o’clock or so.”

“Great. Should I come to your office?”

“I think one of the empty labs would be fine, if you’re worried about other people seeing, that is,” he said, cocking his head a little as he looked at me.

I swallowed as his eyes flicked to my mouth, and I had to ground my feet to the floor to keep from leaning forward.

“Sounds good.”

“You ok from the other day?” he asked again, and he lowered his voice. “You left so suddenly.”
