Forgetting all about flying south.

Forgetting all about the watch I gave myself for Christmas.

Forgetting too that this is supposed to be my new baby stepsister.

What I really want is coming down those stairs. Already coming straight to me and filling my senses with what I know she has, ripe and ready for the plucking.

And I don’t think I can wait ‘til Christmas morning to unwrap what I decide instantly is all mine.

Therehasbeen a terrible mistake in coming home.

And it’s because the wrong man got married.

Thrusting my hand into my coat pocket, feeling the velvet box with her gift inside it.

It’s the wrong fucking shape.

The wrong gift.

It should be a damned engagement ring…

Chapter 2

Eve

Can a man touch a woman with his eyes?

I mean, like touch her in a way that she wants. Make her feel like he’s doing it with his hands.

That’s the eyes he’s making at my mama.

The eyes of a man who’s in love as if it’s his first time.

“Eve honey? Run on down and see what happened to our drinks, would you?” Mom asks me.

Ike, her new husband and my new step daddy nods, letting me know with a warm smile that it’s okay.

And it is okay. I can take a hint.

I’m eighteen today but I’m no dummy. I can see when these two wanna be alone.

I don’t feel like a servant or anything, already got a ton of those around the place. But Mama and Ike, as he wants me to call him, have been making sure I’m exploring the place instead of being cooped up in my room.

“Make yourself right at home, Eve.” He reminds me on my way out, “What’s ours is yours now, don’t forget.”

I feel myself smiling and nodding. Smiling like I have the past few weeks. Non stop.

All this is just so… unreal. But in the best way. And as much as I know mom was worried about how I’d feel having a step dad, a dad who actually sticks around. Her meeting and marrying Ike is the best thing to ever happen to her. To all of us.

Even my douche bag twin brothers, Ricky and Ronnie.

Come to think of it… I’d better go see just what they’re up to. If they screw this up for me and mom…

A few weeks ago we were on struggle street. Mama taking a third job at factory that opened nearby, stitching leather bags for some company we’d never heard of. The owner of that company is Ike.

And once he spotted my ma on one of his visits to the factory, well.

The rest, as they say is history.
