“Shush,” my sister chastises before I even get a chance to say his whole name.

“I sent him home. It’s too risky, him being here.”

“What time is it?”

“Three a.m.”

“Was this the Italians?” The second the question rolls off my tongue, I regret it.

Calli immediately stops pushing and steps in front of me.She studies me with her eyes narrowed and anger coming off her in waves.

I’ve never seen my sister looking quite so fierce. It’s a little terrifying.

“No, Nico. It was you. All of it was you.”

With those ominous words, she shifts around me once more and continues toward the door next to mine.

“Open the door then,” she demands when I’m right in front of it, forcing me to lean forward and suck in a breath as my ribs smart.

She pushes me into the dark room. Just like mine, the first thing I see is a person curled up on a camp bed on the other side, but I have no way of telling who it is from my position, and it becomes clear that it is isn’t who my sister brought me in here to see the second she spins me around and a hospital bed fills my vision.

If I thought I felt emotional when I believed I was alone, then it’s nothing compared to the heart-stopping moment when my eyes land on the woman in the bed.

“Siren,” I breathe, my voice cracked with emotion.

She’s fast asleep and despite the dark eyes, the bruises and dried blood, she looks as beautiful as ever to me.

Only…

I did that.

I’m the reason she’s lying there with her arm bandaged up and held in a sling around her neck.

“Closer,” I demand, not content with just sitting at the end of the bed, watching her.

Calli wheels me around to the side with her good arm and brings me to a stop.

I immediately reach out for Brianna’s hand, although I hesitate before I make contact.

If this truly is my fault, then she’s not going to want me anywhere near her, let alone touching her.

But in the end, my need for her overrides my thoughts as I take her hand in mine.

She doesn’t move or react in any way, and it cuts my chest straight down the centre.

“Tell me what happened, Calli. Please,” I beg quietly, not taking my eyes off my siren.

“You had a drink, you got angry, and you forced her into your car before you drove like a fucking moron through the city and aquaplaned straight into the side of a fucking building.”

All the air rushes out of my lungs.

“I did this?” The words are so quiet I’m not convinced she’ll hear me, so when she responds, I jump like a pussy.

“Yes.”

“Why? I would never hurt her.”

Calli scoffs, and it cuts me so fucking deep I’m not sure I’ll ever recover from it.
