Emmie and Stella share a knowing look.

“She’s right,” Stella agrees. “I know someone who will get a serious kick out of helping you wash it off.”

“What time is it?” Rhea asks, not lifting her head from Emmie’s shoulder.

“Almost one.”

“Where are they?” Jodie asks.

Without having an answer, we fall into silence, each of us doing our best to support the others and not fall apart under the pressure this night has forced on us.

And that’s exactly how we’re discovered not long later when the door to our suite swings open, revealing some familiar faces who look like they’ve been through even more than we have.

NICO

My adrenaline finally begins to run out as the lift climbs through the building of the hotel we secured the girls in for the night.

But as I look around at each of my boys, I don’t see the same exhaustion on their faces. Behind the blood and dirt, their eyes are still alert and their jaws are set as if this night, this fight, isn’t over.

Well, I guess it’s not. We’re no closer to Ricardo fucking Mariano than we were this time yesterday. In fact, we’re further away.

The motherfucker hadn’t run back to our building to try and flush Ant and Daemon out by force; instead, he left his foot soldiers to do the dirty work for him while he hid like a pussy.

“We’ll get him, Nic,” Toby assures me, his bloody hand wrapping around my shoulder in support.

“You need to get him out of your head, because there’s a woman in there waiting for you to take her to heaven,” Alex adds, trying to lighten the mood a little.

“Doubtful,” I mutter. “She probably won’t even look at me,” I confess, sounding like a fucking pussy as I think about her reaction, or lack thereof, when I walked into Toby’s flat with the guys earlier.

“Dude, you need to get over this ‘oh boohoo me, my girl doesn’t want me bullshit’,” Seb announces, pissing me the fuck off. “If we all had that attitude then we’d all be single right now. You want her, fight for her. Make her see that she can’t possibly live a life without you or your dick.”

“I thought I was.”

“How? Name me one thing you’ve done to prove to her that you’re the one.”

My lips part but no words come out. “I… uh… I…”

“Case in point.”

“I wrote her a letter,” I blurt like an idiot. “Told her how I felt, what I wanted, and she’s just… ignored it. Tried pushing me further away.”

“And you’ve let her,” he counters. “She’s scared, Nico. Scared you’re joking. Terrified that the player she first met can’t possibly be serious about her.”

“Jesus, who made you the expert?”

“It doesn’t take an expert to see what’s right in front of your face,” he points out. “Go in there and show her with actions, not just words on a scrap of fucking paper.”

The lift dings, putting an end to his possibly useful advice, and the second the doors open we all spill out into the pristine hallway.

It’s empty.

“Where the fuck are our guys?” I bark.

We left the girl’s security details here with the sole job of keeping them safe.

There was no sign of them as we walked in. To be fair, there was no sign of anyone, but then it is the middle of the night.
