“Pretty sure my girl is going to rip you a new one when she wakes, man.”
“She’s more than welcome,” I say on a sigh as he gently sits up without disturbing Jodie. “I fucked up.”
“Yeah, man. You really fucking did.”
Silence falls around us as I return to watching Brianna sleep.
“Has she woken up yet?”
“Not really, no. The anaesthesia is still wearing off. The doctors aren’t worried.”
“G-good.” I think.
I scrub my hand down my face once more, scrubbing at the roughness of my jaw.
“I’m sorry,” I whisper, my chest cracking in two all over again as those words spill from my lips.
“It’s not us you need to be saying that to, man.”
“I know. But it seems like the right place to start.”
“Nico?” a sleepy voice says.
“Yeah, Demon. He’s here.”
I look over just in time to see her flip over.
Her eyes collide with mine and narrow in anger.
“I’m glad you survived so that Brianna can kill you herself when she wakes up,” she seethes, anger laced through every word.
“I’m sorry, Jodie. I never meant to—”
“You could have killed her, Nico,” she shrieks, getting to her feet and glaring pure hate at me. “What did she ever do to you?”
My lips part to respond, but Jodie quickly cuts me off.
“Nothing, Nico. Nothing is the answer you’re looking for.”
“Okay, baby,” Toby soothes, getting to his feet behind her and pulling her into his body.
“I’m just so fucking angry,” she says as he kisses her neck.
“I know. But throwing abuse at Nico isn’t going to get us anywhere. I think his broken nose is a painful enough reminder that he fucked up.”
Broken nose. Well, I guess that makes a lot of sense.
“Let’s go get coffee,” he says, tucking her into his side. “And some fresh air.”
“B-but—”
“Brianna will be safe with Calli.”
“What about me?” I blurt, regretting the words instantly. I blame the painkillers.
“What the fuck about you, Nico?” Jodie spits. “I wouldn’t trust you with a fucking hamster right now. You’re a fucking liability. Damien needs his head testing if he’s seriously considering allowing you to move up through the ranks.”
