“Or I won’t,” he teases with a knee-weakening smile. “I guess you’ll just have to wait and find out.”

I shake my head at him, attempting to step back so he can take me home.

“Just one more thing,” he says, dragging me back and slamming his lips down on mine for another earth-shattering kiss.

By the time he grabs my packed bag and throws it over his shoulder so we can leave, I’m seriously questioning my choices. Would it be such a bad thing if I turned up at school tomorrow totally unprepared?

Yes. Yes, it would.

With my head held high and my decision to head home my only focus, I walk through Nico’s front door and head toward the lift.

The drive home is somewhat tense. He’s not happy about this, that much is obvious, but thankfully he doesn’t try to argue with me, or attempt to change my mind again.

My stomach knots painfully as I question my own decision once again when he pulls up outside my building.

It’s weird. This place has been my home for quite some time now, but sitting out here, I don’t get the same sense of contentment, the feeling of coming home that I’m used to.

Nico kills the engine and I make the mistake of looking over at him.

My demand for him to turn around again dances on the tip of my tongue, but my refusal to bow down, my stubbornness to follow through on my own plan wins out.

“I’ll walk you up, then you need to message me before you leave in the morning, and then again when you get to school.”

My lips part to tease his over-the-top demands, but then I look into his eyes and see his genuine concern and my words are swallowed by guilt.

His concerns are warranted. And it’s selfish of me to demand this. But it’s what I need. I’ve been smothered almost since the moment I woke up in that hospital. I told Jodie I was going home before school tomorrow, and I fully intend on seeing that through.

“I will,” I agree, pushing his passenger door open and climbing out.

The familiar scent of home hits me as I swing my front door open and look around.

It looks exactly the same as I remember. The glass I left on the coffee table is still there, along with the pile of dishes in the sink.

“You want some help tidying up?” Nico asks, taking in the chaos I usually live in.

“No, it’s okay. I’m sure you’ve got better things to be doing.”

He wants to argue, I can practically see it on the tip of his tongue. But thankfully, he never gets the chance to voice it, because his phone rings.

Pulling it from his pocket, he stares down at the screen.

“I need to take this,” he says reluctantly.

“I’ll be okay here. I’ll keep my phone on. Everything will be fine.”

“I still don’t like it,” he confesses.

“I know, but it’s how it is. Go and spend the night strategizing with the guys. I’m just going to be working and having an early night for tomorrow.”

“Call me in the morning, yeah?”

“You got it, big man.”

A cocky smirk twitches at his lips at my nickname.

“Come here. I’m not leaving without a reminder of why you agreed to this at the forefront of your mind.”

“You think it would be possible to forget about you?” I say quickly before he steals my lips once more.
