Ripping his eyes from mine, Nico reaches behind him to cover up before he lowers himself slowly into…

Shit. A wheelchair.

He must be even worse than he looks if he’s resorted to allowing someone to push him around.

“Does it hurt bad?” I ask, keeping my expression neutral.

“Pretty bad, yeah.”

“Good,” I spit.

All the air rushes out of his lungs, his brow crinkling in confusion.

“Seriously?” I hiss. “You’re surprised that I’m pissed? You could have fucking killed us, Nico.”

My throat burns as I shout at him.

“Okay, Brianna. Please try and stay calm,” the nurse soothes, stepping up to me with a blood pressure monitor in her hand that really isn’t necessary. I already know it’s sky fucking high.

“You remember what happened?” Nico asks me, still looking like a broken, confused puppy.

“Yes,” I hiss.

“I think it’s probably time you left me to care for my patient, Mr. Cirillo.”

Nico’s chin drops as he looks from me to the nurse in shock.

“B-but—”

“Do as you’re told for once in your life, Nico, and fuck off.”

Lifting his hand, he scrubs his jaw, staring at me as if I’m talking an entirely different language.

Just when I’m about to repeat myself, he speaks.

“Fine,” he huffs, wrapping his fingers around the tube that disappears into the back of his hand and tugging.

My stomach convulses as it comes free and a little blood trickles over his skin.

“Nico, that’s not—”

“I don’t care, Janice. I don’t fucking care, okay?”

Before he’s finished talking, he’s shuffled himself toward the door.

“This isn’t over, Siren,” he says ominously before fleeing the room, once again leaving both of us with the image of his naked arse.

“Well,” the nurse—Janice, I guess—says, still looking at the door. “Not sure that arse makes up for his attitude.”

I have no idea if it’s whatever drugs they have me on, but for two minutes, I forget about all this bullshit, and I throw my head back and laugh.

And fuck does it feel good. Even if it makes everything hurt like a bitch.

“You needed that, huh?” Janice says once I’ve come back to reality.

“Like you wouldn’t believe. So what’s the deal here?” I ask, gesturing to myself.

“Good news. You’re going to be totally fine. You’ve got a concussion, so you’ll probably suffer with the effects of that for a few days. Headache, sickness, dizziness possibly.”
