“Who do you think found you both so quickly on Friday night?”

I open my mouth to respond, but there are no words.

The second our driver drops into his seat, he pulls away from the curb. But one glance over my shoulder lets me know that we’re not alone.

Another blacked-out SUV trails behind us.

“This is serious, isn’t it?”

Calli reaches forward and presses a button that makes a screen appear, blocking us from the driver.

“It always has been,” she says finally when we’re in the privacy of our little cocoon. “But with every day that passes, the risk of something happening is getting higher.”

“The guys are getting antsy. And finding out about you and Nico hasn’t helped,” Jodie adds, proving she’s listening. Not that she couldn’t while we’re stuck in the back of a car.

Guilt rushes through my veins, but I refuse to apologise for something that was not my fault. I wasn’t the one who lost my shit Friday night and drove through the city like a madman.

“Something needs to happen before they all blow.”

“Can’t they make the move?” I ask, totally unaware of anything involving what’s going on now.

“They could. But they don’t want to.”

“So we’re just sitting ducks?”

“Pretty much. They’re testing out how good their leak is by allowing false intel to go back to the Italians. Only time will tell if the leak is a part of the Family who’ve been informed.”

“Check you out, Miss Cirillo,” I say, trying to force a little lightness into my tone. When we first met, she was a frustrated, sheltered princess desperate to embrace the mafia blood that runs through her veins. It seems that with the help of a certain bad boy, she might just have got her wish.

“I love not being kept in the dark,” she confesses. “And Daemon tells me everything. Well, probably not everything but I trust him, and I know there will be things that he can’t divulge, even to me. But I finally feel like I’m where I’m meant to be, that I’ve found my place.”

“Well, it looks good on you. You’re glowing,” I tease, making her eyes almost pop out of her head in panic.

I can’t help but laugh at her.

She can freak out all she likes, but she’s on borrowed time, and she knows it.

“This all feels like it belongs in someDie Hardmovie,” I mutter, going back to the most pressing issue.

“Get used to it,” Calli says. “Something tells me that it’s going to be worse before it gets better.”

Silence falls between us, the weight of the danger we’re all in sitting heavy on my shoulders.

“What happened with Brad?” Jodie suddenly blurts, leaning around Calli to look at me.

“Umm…”

“Nico said you cried when he left.”

I can’t help but laugh. “I wasn’t crying because he left, I can assure you of that.”

“What did he say?”

“Was his usual charming, apologetic, boring self.”

Jodie chuckles while Calli frowns.

“Who is he?”
