“Huh, sorry. Can you repeat the question?”

Her brows knit in concern as she continues staring at me.

After a silent couple of seconds, she pulls a chair closer and sits down opposite me.

It’s not until she does that that I realise the room is empty. The lesson is over and I’m… still sitting here.

Shit.

“I’m sorry, I totally checked out.”

“How is she?” Mrs. Hendrix asks softly.

“H-how is who?”

“Nico, I’m no fool, and I’d appreciate if you didn’t treat me like one. I know that you and Brianna… know each other.”

“Y-you knew?” I ask, a frown forming on my brow as she nods. “Why did you schedule her in this lesson?”

Hell, I might have been the one to do the damage where Brianna is concerned, but Mrs. Hendrix put her right in the line of fire.

“Because I’m worried about you. I’d hoped that her being here might help you focus.”

I can’t help but laugh.

“It worked, too, didn’t it? I’ve seen the work you’ve given her from your revision sessions. You want to impress so you’re putting the effort in.”

“Risky game you’re playing there, Mrs. Hendrix.”

“Because you never play dirty,” she teases, making me swallow nervously.

“Things between us… they’re…”

“Complicated?” she asks when I trail off.

“I was going to say toxic, but yeah, that works.”

“You care about her though, don’t you?”

I swallow once more.

“You don’t need to answer that. I can see it in your eyes.” She gives me a soft, encouraging smile. “Whatever you’ve done, Nico, she’ll forgive you. She just needs time. That and not to be thrown into a building at a million miles an hour.”

I narrow my eyes at her.

“Who are you?” I ask, more than suspicious of how we might be connected.

“None of that matters,” she says, waving my concern off. “You need to focus on you, and her.”

I slump down in the chair and let out a heavy sigh.

“She won’t see me,” I confess, scrubbing my hand down my face.

“How hard have you tried?”

My lips part to say something, but I soon realise that I have no decent answer to that question.

“Try harder, Nico. No battle was ever won by sitting back and letting everything happen around you.”
