“What the fuck happened? I thought you were making up, then Jodie came back after you left, saying—” He cuts himself off abruptly and slams his lips shut.

“Saying what?” I ask, concern for my siren flooding my system.

“Nothing. She said nothing.”

“Tobias,” I growl, my fist curling on my lap. I’m more than happy to beat it out of him if I have to.

He rolls his eyes, frustrated at himself for saying anything.

“She was upset, okay? Jodie said she found her crying in the shower.”

All the air rushes out of my lungs as I stare at him in disbelief.

“She was crying?” I ask, assuming I must have misheard him.

“Forget I said anything.”

“Yeah, like that is going to happen.”

Pushing back to my feet, I pull my phone from my pocket and walk back out of the common room.

Finding her contact, I hit call and put my phone to my ear as I lower my arse to a picnic bench away from the students who are crowded out here in the morning sun.

It rings and rings and rings. But eventually, instead of her sultry voice, I’m forced to listen to her automated voicemail.

She couldn’t even do me a solid recording a personalised one so I could listen to her voice.

Way to sound like a pussy, dickhead.

“Fucking answer,” I demand, trying again. I know she’s staring at the screen, looking at my name staring back at her. Hell, she might even have a photo of my cock as my contact. It certainly is my best feature, after all. I also know that she’s tempted. Really fucking tempted to answer. To hear what I’ve got to say to her. Or at least that’s what I keep telling myself as I ring again and again.

Fucking pussy.

I’m about to do it again, because I’ve apparently stooped to those levels today, when the bell rings out loudly in the building behind me.

Instead of hitting call once more, I pull up our messages.

Nico: You can try and avoid me all you like, Siren. You know I’ll get to you eventually.

I can’t help but smirk as I think about how she’s going to read that as a threat.

It isn’t one, though.

It’s a promise.

I’m not expecting to hear anything from her, so I’m hardly surprised when my phone remains silent during my classes.

I almost tried again at break, but I figured it would be pointless. If I’m going to get to her, then I need to be smarter.

Lingering at the end of the hallway in the building that houses the English department, I wait for Mrs. Hendrix to leave her office in favour of the restaurant.

All the staff here make use of the talented chefs that are employed to feed the masses, so I have no doubt that she’ll be heading out any minute to get to the front of the queue. Hell knows I’d be doing the same if I didn’t have other plans.

I don’t have to wait long to be proved right, and because she works in the most exclusive school in the city, she makes it easy for me by not even locking her door. What’s the point when every single kid in this place could buy the contents of it one hundred times over?

Double-checking that I’m not being watched, I slip down the hallway and then into her office.
