“I did. He didn’t.”

“He left with some serious blue balls. You can definitely expect a visit tonight.”

“This isn’t helping,” I sulk.

“I disagree,” Stella argues. “You should keep talking it out. We need to hear all this if we’re going to help.”

“Nocturnal visits are the best, aren’t they?” Emmie muses.

I throw my hands up in despair before swallowing a large mouthful of coffee, the whisky burning all the way down my throat.

“I’m going to shower. I can still smell him.”

With my coffee in hand, I take off through the room. Their eyes follow my every movement and I’m almost out of the room when Stella suggests, “Maybe you should send him a video. Show him the prize he might get after all his hard work tonight.”

“You know, I don’t think any of you are taking this seriously. It’s more than sex. It’s…” I trail off when I hear my own words.

“Exactly,” Jodie announces. “That is exactly my point.”

I cry out in frustration before shutting myself into her guest bedroom.

Lowering my arse to the bed, I take another sip of my coffee and will my heart to stop racing.

Jodie is pushing me for a reason. She only wants the best for me, and she knows that hiding from all of this and smothering how I really feel is only going to make things worse in the long run. But I don’t know how to do anything else. The prospect of opening myself up to any kind of possibility other than what we’ve had in the past is nothing short of terrifying.

The second a soft knock sounds on the door, I know who it is.

“Come in,” I call, and the door opens immediately, revealing who I expected.

“You okay?” Calli asks, softly closing the door behind her.

The pained sigh that passes my lips tells her everything she needs to hear. Lowering her arse next to mine, she reaches for my hand.

“Everything is going to be okay, you know. And it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to process all of this and how you feel about Nico, or anything else.”

“Thank you,” I breathe, squeezing her hand.

“Jodie hates seeing you like this. She wants you to fix it all so she can see you smile again.”

“I know.”

Silence falls between us as I think of my best friend and everything she’s done for me over the past few years.

Her intentions are never anything less than wanting the best for me. And there has been more than a few times that she’s had little choice but to take the hard route and force me to deal with my shit.

“Nico knows about the baby,” Calli finally confesses quietly.

“I know. He came to tell me.”

“Was he… angry?”

I shake my head as I think back. “No. He was weirdly calm. Proud, I think.”

I glance over just in time to see her swipe an escaped tear from her cheek.

“He crashed into our flat like a hurricane. I thought Daemon was going to shoot him when I dashed out of the bedroom behind him and found him with his gun raised.”

“Not sure if I’m relieved or pissed off that he didn’t,” I confess.
