Once there, Yano was the first to greet her, bouncing on his feet with some pent-up energy.

“I drilled a hole today. Tomorrow it will be a room, and we can have an additional hangout area. Isn’t that fantastic?”

“Good job, Yano. Did you need my help tonight?”

“Maybe, maybe not. I will let you know.”

He bounced once more and was then whizzing through the air, his magic bouncing off the walls he had left behind. More magic swiveled in her path as she strolled her way inside their abode, avoiding people in general but greeting those she couldn’t avoid. Each scent was different and her smile brightened when sunshine filled her nostrils.

“Timmy! Why is your heart beating so fast, and where is Tammy?”

The male of the twin Fae stopped in his tracks and sizzled like a firecracker. “Daria, you won’t believe what happened.”

“What happened?”

The firecracker burst. “I activated something new. Or unlocked it. I don’t know anymore. Feel this.”

He took her hand, palm up, and pressed his against it. She hissed when heat seeped in, but it was brief as he called it back with a whistle. Seconds later, an icy sensation crawled up her arm and continued spreading its way through her body until she felt like she was standing in the coldest room. An involuntary shiver wracked her body before the ice disappeared, but not the tangible joy radiating off the male Fae.

“Isn’t it amazing?”

“It is. When did you learn this?”

“This morning. Every day I seem to wake up with something new, and it just makes me so excited.”

She swallowed. She maintained her smile even when she didn’t feel like smiling anymore, refusing to let him see nothing but her support.

“I’m excited for you. I bet Tammy will be ecstatic.”

“She’s already ecstatic. Her body’s brewing with something, too, and we are just waiting for what it will produce. Have you seen Yano?”

“He’s off to drill again.”

“Oh, let me help him out. Maybe changing the temperature will make it easier for him.”

Footsteps faded as Timmy walked away. She continued in the other direction and ducked when something whistled above her head and crashed on a nearby wall. The magic released spread like powder on her, wrinkling her nose with its potency and unfamiliarity. Another Fae, another power unlocked.

Longing hit her hard, squeezing her gut until it was hard to take in air. She closed her eyes to steady her breathing and needed a moment to fist her hand against the wall to fight its shaking. She also needed to fight the urge to just lean there and absorb it all, knowing she was this close to having a breakdown.

It seemed that after the curse put upon their Fae family suppressing their powers and trapping them in this dimension for years had been broken, everyone had been able to slowly, steadily get access to their powers back and take their independent steps to freedom…except her. She was still blind as a bat. She was still with her limited abilities, dwindling as the days went by and sending a hollow sensation down the crevices of her soul. Soon whatever she had would be gone, and she would be nothing but a shell—and she was so tiredof waiting for a miracle to happen.

I will have it. I need to have it.

Somehow, her mind calmed down and she continued her walk, uninterrupted. Somehow, she managed to pack the rest of her belongings until her backpack had everything she needed, a compact thing that would not make anyone suspect anything. Still, she made it a point to join dinner with the group, where Marx sat at the head of the table, looking less severe than he had in the past few years.

“Daria,” Bianca exclaimed, glowing with her smile as she waited for Daria to be seated. At the moment, the woman looked more like a Fae than a bear shifter, ethereal in her happiness. “Did you visit my cousin?”

“Cousins. You should visit sometime.”When I’m long gone.“They miss you guys.”

“I will. Soon.” Bianca bit her lip. “Maybe after Billy finishes his second honeymoon.”

“Billy’s always on his honeymoon,” Marx pointed out. “It just so happens to be with the same woman this time.”

Bianca grinned. Even Daria smiled, so used to hearing about Billy’s escapades with women that it still felt odd knowing Isabella was the only one for him now after all these years. The same could be said about Marx, too, who stood as their leader during their cursed era and never had anyone to share his burden with until Bianca came into his life. The wave of sadness at leaving them kept Daria quiet during the meal, riddled with the hope that she would come back to this same happiness.

She dawdled. She delayed. She gulped down the last of her drink and hopped off the chair, knocking the glass in her nervousness. Because she knocked objects down all the time, no one was fazed.

“Great meal. Amazing meal. I think I ate twice my size. Now I have to work that energy off.”
