“Dragons are calm and dignified. They don’t flutter about like butterflies.”

“You haven’t met the temperamental dragons yet.”

“Have you?” she asked, taken aback and genuinely interested. He smiled, then bit back laughter when she elbowed him.

“Hey, I’m going to drop him if you keep that up.”

“Don’t drop him,” Riva grumbled, then deliberately looked away and pretended she didn’t care.

Sona was quiet, observing them and their surroundings, her expression unreadable. She sighed when her gaze flicked towards Oscar.

“I think Fluffy latched on to our little human.”

Daria pouted. “I thought Fluffy liked me.”

I like you.

The words came fast and unbidden. He tucked his tongue in, suddenly dry, and nodded. He felt Sona’s eyes on him again but didn’t bother looking back. He didn’t dare look at Daria, either, in case some part of her could still glimpse things and she would see straight through his façade.

Oscar was nice to look at and safe. Fluffy was not bad, either, both leading the throng for once and perhaps among the most easygoing of the bunch. The long stretches of silence reminded him that they still had one man down, but Diego’s steady pulse assured him that it wouldn’t be permanent.

“By the way…”

“Hmm?”

“Did you see me get out of the water naked, by any chance?”

A strangled sound bubbled from his throat and made him nearly explode in hysterical, panicked laughter. Now he felt three female gazes solely on him, with Riva openly gaping at the corner of his eye. He coughed to excuse the sound.

“I was more concerned over your safety.”

Which was a non-answer.

“I was safe enough. I had a guard.”

“I saw.”Your tits and your nipples. Your—“I saw your guard.”

“Right.” That relaxed her. “Fluffy guarded well. Even Diego’s sneakiness would not have gotten anywhere.”

And now he was filled with insane, raging jealousy over an unconscious vampire who didn’t even see her naked but could have. Charlie closed his eyes, called himself an idiot in his head, and counted the seconds back to sanity. It didn’t last long as Daria’s hand wrapped around his arm—not lightly but urgently. When he opened his eyes, he found that the vast, endless clouds before them had curled to a height where a circle formed and a pagoda-like structure floated…

And inside that structure was a man with golden robes and gleaming silver eyes.

“It’s him.”

Something in her tone had him glancing sharply. “You can see him?”

“Yes.”

“Can you see me?”

“No.”

“Can you see the temple?”

She sucked in a breath. “There’s a temple?”

Oh, that hope was bound to kill her if she wasn’t careful. But his heart jumped, anyway, wanting to trust that hope, too. He bumped her shoulder.
