Why are you not answering?

Daria, I hope you didn’t go to the house alone.

Daria, I swear to heavens if you don’t answer me…

His phone pinged with her name.

I got what I needed.

Charlie blinked at the brief message, waiting for more. When none came, his fingers flew on the keypad.

Did you sneak inside the house? Did the barrier leave? Are you still there?

Her response was faster.

I got what I needed. Don’t go back. I’m no longer there.

She wouldn’t lie to him, but he went there, anyway, just to make sure all tracks were covered and the house wasn’t left in shambles—or with some ghost out for vengeance at whatever Daria had done. Relief flooded him at the area’s intact state, so he sat in the hiding spot for a while, observing the dark house and wondering what she got and how she got it.

Where are you?

Daria’s reply, again, was prompt.

Home. Go home.

Two months of no communication and more months of barely spending time with Daria and she knew him like the back of her hand. After a year of spending all his time with Hayley, she didn’t know him at all. As for him…it seemed like he didn’t know either of them, after all, and there was no one to blame but himself for that.

Congratulations on the job,Daria's follow up arrived while he commuted back to the city and made his way home, where the forest and his kin awaited.

Thanks,he replied, leaving it at that.

He could tell her in person.

A month passed and he still didn’t see Daria. But he accepted a job in a marketing company as an assistant and became its errand boy. He didn’t mind, the routine giving him distraction until he forgot all about his restlessness and focused on doing his best. After work hours, however, his mind wandered again.

You haven’t been visiting our forest home. What’s up?

I was there earlier,Daria replied. You were at work.

His fingers were still moving when another message came. He read Hayley’s name on the screen.

Hey. How was the job interview?

There had been a scattering of texts the past few weeks between them but nothing that indicated she was ready to get back together. Oddly, it left him missing the sex, but nothing else, andthatleft him feeling guilty.

Good.The job I have now’s also good.

I have a friend who works for Mino Enterprises. Can you meet with him later?

Is it for another job position?

It’s just to talk and see your prospects. Please. Can you do it for me?

Perhaps the guilt played a big part in him saying yes and he found himself walking towards the texted location while he made a call. Daria answered on the third ring.

“Hey, woman, I haven’t seen you in ages. Would you like to come back to our territory in an hour or two and hang out?”

“What?”
