There were buzzing noises and the sound of cars in the distance, but fading away. He heard Yano’s voice, then silence.

“Daria…”

“We found a spot for me to practice my magic on.”

“Practice on?”

“To get it all out once and for all. To get rid of this evil. My magic is calling me, and I know it’s the only way we can fix this.”

“Daria, remember what Mr. Bald Man said?”

“I’m done waiting, Charlie.” Her tone softened. “Trust me. It’s time. I need to go.”

“All right. Just text me the place. I want to be there for you.”

They hung up on that note, and her assurance should have been enough. But something was missing, nagging at his brain until he couldn’t stay still. Antsy, he forced himself to stay as far away from the prison chambers as possible, waiting for her information. He called when it didn’t come fast enough, prompting a message to finally arrive.

The address wasn’t precise, but the landmarks surrounding it gave him an idea. When she didn’t answer his next call, he resorted to texting.

How did your magic know?

He put on a coat and tucked in some weapons, just in case. He called Alexa next.

“I need Edmund on standby. We might need to lock this sanctuary down and ask for help from our Fae friends. Or any other friends with magic.”

“What’s going on?”

He gave a brief explanation and let his sister do her thing, then flicked the screen when he noticed another incoming message. Daria’s reply had his body going cold.

It came to my dream. It told me.

Then Charlie was racing out of the sanctuary, the fear returning tenfold.

Chapter 16

“Go for it, Yano.”

Yano didn’t say a word, but he was ready, circling the space with his little wings and making her long to do the same. Once only able to drill large holes and recreate cave spaces, the Fae had graduated to protection runes like one of their kin, Jester, after lots of practice and the extra boost of magic unlocking the curse had granted. When the runes glowed, she widened her stance and planted her feet firmly on the ground.

“Ready,” Yano called out.

I will fly,she promised to herself. When all of this is over, and the evil is gone.

She would fly and soar up in the sky, free and complete. For now, she closed her eyes and drew on her focus, the runes like music to her ears. She tugged at her magic, imaginary fingers cajoling them out.

Thank you for your help, but I need more help. Help me fight the evil.

There was no response at first, the silence comforting inside her. Then tendrils came forth, swirling in her stomach before holding on to her invitation. She tugged some more until they were at the edges of her skin and felt the brightness spreading.

Yes, that’s it. More. Please.

Whereas it was enough to have her fingers producing ice or fire—or the recent magical net she had kept Sona in when taking her to prison—she didn’t settle now, bracing herself as she switched from gentle tugs to firmer yanks. More tendrils scurried out to join the rest until she was close to the amount she wanted. But it didn’t stop her, the flow turning into a gush until she was bursting at the seams.

“Brace, Yano.”

She couldn’t hear her voice amid the buzzing, then the roaring in her head. But she trusted Yano, and that had her releasing all of her brimming energy. They dashed out of her pores in one intense blast and left her blinded and paralyzed. Panic glinted for a second before her eyesight came back, and she felt her magic encasing her in like thick padding, the runes stopping them from escaping. A giddiness befell her at her instant success, vibrating through her body as she tried not to bounce.

“Yano, we did it. I didn’t have to leave, after all.” She grinned, drunk as she inhaled the insane power. “We can go back now and release it there. We can stop the evil.”
