“I say there won’t be,” he told her sternly. “You understand me, baby girl?”

She opened her mouth. “Zander—”

“I said no. You wanna keep arguing with me?”

Nope. Not really.

“Good. You bring that up again and there will be trouble.”

One part of her wanted to ask what kind of trouble. Then she wanted to push him until he showed her.

Lord. What was wrong with her? Seriously. She needed her head examined. Pushing him wasn’t smart. What if she went too far and he lost that control?

Maybe that’s why she wanted to do it. To see if he would lose his control.

“I’ll never hurt you, but I’m not letting you do anything to harm yourself and I most certainly am not letting you get involved with someone else. You’re mine. Whether you acknowledge that or not doesn’t make it any less true.”

God.

Did he know what he was doing to her?

Because her whole body just melted. She was about to disappear in a puddle at his feet.

Chill, Keira.

He held up the syringe. “Here’s your medicine.”

“It’s not in pill form?”

“Lochlan thought this would be easier for you to take. Be a good girl and open for me.”

Fuck.

She was in so much trouble.

Zander slidunder the blanket with Keira after he’d given her the antibiotic and painkillers. He hadn’t realized how satisfying taking care of her would be. It made him feel invincible. It was a high.

And if she thought he was going to let her push him away, well, she didn’t know him that well.

But she would soon figure out that he was far too stubborn to let that happen.

She sat stiffly next to him, but he didn’t think she could keep that up. Poor thing was exhausted. She looked like she was close to passing out. He put his arm over the back of the sofa as he hit play on the movie.

Just as he thought, she eventually relaxed back into the cushions. Her yawns grew more frequent. When he moved closer, she slid into him, the side of her face pressing to his chest.

“That’s it, baby girl. Lean on me.”

Her breathing seemed to slow and he thought she had fallen asleep until she spoke up.

“I’m going to get attached to you,” she said suddenly. “And then what happens when I have to leave? I can’t do it. I can’t depend on you.”

“You never have to leave.”

“You don’t understand. There are things you don’t know.”

He had a feeling that there were plenty of things that she wasn’t telling him. But he’d get it all out of her eventually.
