“Are you nervous around me?”

“I don’t . . . what?”

“I think that would be yes. You haven’t had a chance to talk about me to anyone, so that’s out. Do you remember things I tell you?”

“I guess so?” She met Webb’s gaze through the rearview mirror and he shrugged. Great, no help there.

“Do you think I’m attractive?” Zander asked.

“I . . . I . . .”

What was going on with him? What was with the weird questions and the way he kept staring into her eyes? Did she think he was attractive? Well, of course she did. She wasn’t blind or dumb. Sheesh.

“Zander, we’re here.”

She glanced around. What was Webb talking about? They couldn’t be there. This was the middle of nowhere! All that was here was a nice-looking farmhouse and a large barn.

“This isn’t a town,” she pointed out.

“There’s no need to go into town. Lochlan has a private clinic in his barn,” Zander said.

Great. So there was no opportunity of anyone seeing her or helping her.

Fuck.

If she’d known that then she would have put up more of a fuss about coming here.

“Why am I wearing a hoodie if we’re not even going to see anyone?”

“Lochlan will see you,” Zander replied.

“He’s a dentist. I hardly think he’ll notice what my butt looks like.”

“He’s a man. Of course he would.”

“Right.” She gave him an exasperated look, then she stared back at the barn.

Nope. This wasn’t happening.

Webb climbed out of the truck and stood at the door to the barn, examining their surroundings.

As though he was guarding them. Which was crazy. She didn’t need protecting. No one was after her.

Bartolli could be after you.

She swallowed nauseously. She really didn’t want Bartolli to get hold of her. But she also knew she couldn’t remain hidden by Zander forever. At some stage she’d leave and be on her own again.

You can only rely on yourself.

And the sooner she left the better. Because despite his strange ways, Zander was growing on her.

Like a fungus.

A really sexy fungus.

Lord help her.

All this talk of being her guardian, of helping her, looking after her, that sounded like her every dream come true. But she knew that was all it would ever be.
