But she wasn’t in the mood to be reasonable.
This was her story and she was sticking to it.
Lochlan let out a chuckle. “How about we go for the sedation?”
“Will I be awake?”
“Yes, but few patients have any memory of the procedure,” he reassured her. “And you won’t be in pain. You’ll feel groggy for a while afterward but Zander will take care of you, I’m sure.”
“You’re certain I need to have this?” she asked, squeezing Squeaks and Zander’s hand.
“Yes, you need to have this. An infection like this could be dangerous to your health if we leave it,” Lochlan said seriously.
“Can Zander stay?” she asked, shocking herself. And him, if the way he stiffened next to her was any indication.
“Until the drugs take effect, he can.”
Lochy moved away to prepare the sedation and Zander crouched next to her. She found herself leaning into him, wanting to feel him close.
“It will be all right, Little Thief. Remember, what I said, I’m not going to let anything bad happen to you.”

Zander paced impatiently out in the waiting room with Webb.
That asshole, Lochlan, had kicked him from the room. Keira had seemed very dazed and hadn’t protested, so he’d figured he wasn’t abandoning her.
But it felt like it.
He drew out his phone, checking down the list again.

“Would you say that Keira makes eye contact with me a lot?” he asked the other man.
“Um, is that some sort of trick question?” Webb gave him a confused look.
“How would that be a trick question?”
“Why are you asking me that?” Webb asked.
“Do you know how frustrating it is when you answer a question with a question?” Zander asked. “I’m trying to work out if Keira is attracted to me. I have this list.”
“You’re trying to work out whether she’s attracted to you through a list?” Webb asked.
“Yes, although it’s not that helpful.”
“Funny, I thought it would be a foolproof method.”
“Exactly.”
“That was sarcasm.”
Zander sighed. “I wish people would stop using sarcasm on me. It is wasted.”
