Zander snorted. “You can't lie for shit.” He withdrew a key fob from his pocket, and the car next to us bleeped.

I jumped at the noise and the accompanying flash in the dark night. The muted golden glow lit up the area, showing just how my section of the city was with no starlight and a few street lamps lighting the sky above us.

“Oh," I said, inconsequentially. “Well, if it's not out of your way...” I bit my lip, knowing I was going back on what I said and promised myself I wouldn't do it. But the warmth of the car called, and I was already cold. I slipped my arms around myself, squeezing my waist tight.

“It's no problem.” He opened the door to the luxury European sports car. The brand was obscure, and probably some sort of ten manufacturing run, limited-edition billionaire sport that I didn't even recognise the badging on the front of the car.

“Thank you.” Still, I hesitated.

“If you'd like to st—” Zander broke his words off violently, and cursed under his breath. I turned to look at him as his lips pressed together. Dark eyes glowered at me from beneath dipped brows. He shook his head. “Just... get in, Juniper.”

“What were you going to say?” Still thinking about what he hadn’t said, I slid into the leather interior, and it still smelled like a new car. My hands wrapped over the creamy leather as I snuggled into the plush seat that would've been more suited to some sort of luxury theater than a city vehicle.

Zander said nothing, only fixing me with a hard stare, and shut the door, blocking the night out and creating a barrier between us.

Working for Zander Klauss was a whole lot more interesting than I thought.

CHAPTER FOUR

ZANDER

Ipulled up in frontof Juniper’s small apartment block in a dingy area, glad I made her take me up on my offer of a lift. No person should be walking around this area—either at night or any other time for that matter—and although she did appear to have gotten through unscathed in the last however long she’d been walking around the area, that didn’t preclude her luck from running out tonight or any other night.

My heart clenched as she fidgeted in her purse and extracted her key. Her striped elf leggings pressed together at the knees, coat riding up to show a thin slice of pale skin tone beneath the thin material. The altruist in me was relieved. I asked and offered her a lift.

Hell, I almost offered to take her home.

She's not a pet, Zander.

No, she wasn't. She was my employee, and that was where that relationship ended. No matter how much I loved the banter, I was starting to find Miss Juniper Blackthorne quite interesting.

“This is you?” I asked, though I didn't need to.

Juniper nodded at her knees. Twirling her keys between her fingers, they jingled, ringing like mini Christmas bells in the interior of my sports car.

"Do you–" She coughed into her hand and shot me a sideways look before her attention returned to her keys. She inhaled a quick breath in, twisting the sharp edges of her keys between fingers so tight, I'm surprised she didn't cut herself. “Do you want to come in?”
