“Got a plan to get to them?” Dugald asks.

“Yes,” I say with a grin.

I’m as big as the lieutenants are and the rest of the demons between us are becoming less and less significant. I swipe with my sword in a wide arc and the air is filled with the viscera of destroyed demonic beings.

It creates an opening and I stride through it. I’m aware of Duncan and Dugald, both staying close. Duncan is naked and unarmed, but he still fights, using his bare fists. The three demons I’m aiming for smile, but it doesn’t touch their eyes, and despite the gesture their faces are impassive, devoid of any true emotion.

The middle one nods and the other two raise their swords and move forward. I’m not a swordsman but Dugald is incredible, and watching him is art in motion. Next to him I’m a clumsy oaf at best as I’ve had no such training, at least not that I can remember.

Perhaps in a prior life I was skilled though because the blade feels natural in my hand. As I move and parry, the first lieutenants strike; the motion feels right. I couldn’t explain how I did it or why, but it works. The steel of our weapons clangs, ringing loudly, and then the other one joins the fray.

Dugald and Duncan keep the surging demonic horde at bay while I fight the leaders. When my steel clashes with theirs the golden fire on my sword licks along their blades. Our blades meet again and again as we all try to find an opening. Two on one is not a fair fight by any means, but in battle fair is whatever it takes to win.

I spin and use my sword to block an attack at my back. Steel slides along steel, then I duck and swing it over my head, trying to take the other opponent by surprise. He moves too quick for the move, getting his sword up to parry, but it’s close.

My sword clangs onto his near the hilt. The magical fire of mine leaps out and encompasses his hands where they grip his hilt. The demon’s mouth opens wide, and it screams. The sound is high-pitched and causes a cold chill to go down my spine. The flames take his hands like kindling, and in a single beating of my heart the fire goes up his arms and then engulfs him.

He spins away and runs, spreading golden flames across the hordes of demons he passes, then he leaps off the tower. I can’t relish the victory because my other opponent is swinging at my head. I dodge to one side, feeling the steel so close to my face it could shave me and I lose a few strands of hair off my head.

But he’s overextended, leaving himself open. I don’t hesitate, driving my blade into his guts. The flames explode and engulf, burning him quickly. He stumbles back and sets fire to more of the once army.

I turn to face the final lieutenant. He is standing at the edge of the tower staring. He sighs, shakes his head, then turns and leaps off the side, disappearing into the swirling dark. The remains of the horde screech in despair and throw themselves over the edge too, either following their leader or to avoid the fire.

In moments there is only the three of us left on top of the tower. The threat gone, my magic drains away and I’m left weak in the knees. I stumble and Duncan is there, holding me upright. Dugald moves a distance away, looking for something.

“Duncan,” I say, turning into him.

We wrap our arms around each other. I’m acutely aware of his nakedness, but it doesn’t seem to faze him in the slightest.

“Aye,” he smiles. “My love.”

We kiss, and for the moment at least I don’t care that Dugald is watching with what I’m sure is a disapproving look. I thought I’d lost Duncan forever and I’m not going to let this moment pass without reveling in at least his kiss.

“Ahem,” Dugald clears his throat, closer than I was aware having been lost in Duncan’s arms and kiss.

We break our kiss and Dugald carefully avoids looking at Duncan while holding out a kilt. He motions it towards Duncan, who laughs and takes the cloth. Duncan stands up and expertly wraps the kilt around.

The three of us stare at each other in silence. Both the men are watching and waiting for me to take the lead. I’m not sure what to do, but my heart is so full seeing Duncan and having him here. Knowing I almost lost him is almost more than I can bear.

For the briefest of moments, I entertain a wild fantasy, but no. I’m not that girl. I bite my lip and push the thought aside because I don’t know what the effects would be and there is no time anyway. The butterflies of excitement tickling my belly and my lower parts are intriguing but there is no time to act on it. A threesome might make things better, or worse than ever.

“We need to find the spell book and the sword,” I say, looking at Dugald. “Any ideas?”

He blinks slowly, looks from me to Duncan, then back and shrugs.

“No,” Dugald says.

“What book?” Duncan asks.

“A book of spells,” I say. “Hopefully one that will bind the darkness for the final time.”

“You think it’s here?” Duncan asks.

“It’s supposed to be,” I say.

“There were a lot of rooms below,” Duncan offers.

“There were no rooms coming up,” Dugald says, crossing his arms over his chest.
